G3 Live In Tokoyo

Has anybody here seen the latest G3 video Live In Tokoyo? I would like to hear some honest opinions about it because I have a few of my own. I understand that Vai and Satch organize it but it seems like they gave Pertucci a bum deal with that show and DVD. He only got to play two of his own songs???!!! What a letdown that was because his solo album kicks ass!!!The second thing I was wondering is it just me or did Vai have his guitar alot louder than Satch and Petrucci while they were all playing or was his tone ten times better? I love Petrucci's tone old and new but playing right along with Vai,Vai's tone was stomping all over Satch and Petrucci's. I couldn"t believe my ears!!!I wonder also if maybe JP got the opening act treatment not as loud, quick sound check ect,ect. I know I will probably get a beatdown for starting this thread but in my opnion Vai's tone was better than the other two much fatter,sweeter ect.ect.

I haven't seen the Dvd or concert but John Petrucci's songs go longer than Vai's or Satch's, he played more songs live, bu on the dvd there are only 2 of his song, but yeah 3 where given the same play time though.

This is Satch's show, he organizes it and his idea etc, Vai's in the same boat as Petrucci.

I should also add, l ever have liked G3, same old crap over and over again, how bout they get rid of Vai and bring in another guitarist, how about Luke, Satch and Steve Morse. Now that would be great, with Satch's set a toliet break, (sorry he's a great guitar player and all, but l've had of enough of his playing.)

Oh I forgot I wanted to ask if anybody has seen the DvD what color that Bongo Bass is in it that Dave Larue is playing? That's an awesome color! It kind of looks like Desert Gold but it looks alot darker. If thats what color it is i am sold on it in a JP7 soon as I get the dough.

I can't comment on the G3 in Tokyo, but I have the DVD with Joe, Steve, and Yngwie. In that video, when the trio play together, Yngwie's volume is significantly lower than that of Joe and Steve. Go figure. Also, when Steve is out there with his band and Tony McAlpine is playing along with a 3rd guitarist, that guy's volume is basically null. You would think they would have had all the kinks worked out before they produced something like that for a video.
You know what would be a good idea? EBMM putting together a video with Luke, Morse, Pet, and Albert Lee, perhaps like a little compilation with a little contribution from each. Not only would it promote the artists, but their products as well; give the world a taste of EBMM. I, myself, have not had an opportunity to play one as none of the local sellers carry EBMM. Something like this could be used to give players, such as myself, a sort of preview/sampling of their guitars.

I think you'll find the volumes are about the same it's just the way they are panned in the mix. All the G3 releases have Joe featured toward the center for the mix. That idea with EBMM has already been done, it was recorded last year at the open house. Might not see the light of day due to Luke not being happy with the buzzing on his amp. Hope it does though.

Brett I asked him about it at the clinic last April and he said it was supposed to be an Autumn Burst sparkle. He said it didn't quite turn out like he expected but it is a cool looking Bongo none the less.

About the G3 DVD, I have it and I enjoyed it.

I got it fo' Xmas and I love it.

The guitars are evenly loud, me thinks, but if you watch the commentary, you can hear Satch talk about having a lot of trouble on that show.

First, when they were playing "War", he broke a string, so they stopped it, said what was going on to the crowd, and Satch told them how he really wanted this song to be on the DVD, so they're gonna do it again.

Second, on the G3 Jam, Satch had a lot of trouble with his gear, as soon as he started the "Smoke On The Water" solo, you can repeatedly hear a sound similar to the sound when you plug / unplug the guitar.

And, yeah that Bongo kicks a lot of "#&)$&/$)

I'm also very sorry that only two of John Petrucci's songs are on the DVD, but as most people here said, Satch and Vai songs are a lot shorter.

BTW Aren't Satch and Vai "the core members" of G3? ...I didn't know this was completely Satch's idea.

Opnions are like well you have heard the rest of the saying I am sure. I love JP's pre Train Of Thought sound I modeled my own after his and Holdsworth's but man on that DVD next to Vai it sounds real thin and tinny.Must be the switch to the Road Kings I am guessing. I have never been a fan of Satch's tone either he plays with humbuckers that sound like single coils to me but I love his playing. All I have to say is for about 1000 bucks that Carvin Legacy head sounds killer!

I don't think JP's tone sounded thin at all. I thought he sounded great. I don't really have complaints about the mix either. I thought it was fine. I also thought [flame retardant suit on] that JP smoked the other guys during the jams. JP just kept playing when it was his turn. The other guys had to resort to gimmicky trickery with whammy bars, whammy pedals, harmonics, etc. JP just played naturally, and, IMHO, smoked the other two guys. To me, they just seemed to run out of ideas. After that, they dug into the trick bag. But...I'm sure many will disagree. That's okay. We're all entitled to our opinions. I'll agree to disagree.

What I really want instead of G3 Live in Tokyo is a John Petrucci "Suspended Animation" Live DVD/CD set.

I noticed that too, but I thought it might have been my DVD player and TV player at fault. I attended the live show in Toronto and there was no problem with Yngwie's volume there.
