I used one of the GK 2x10 combos you were speaking about with my Fender P-Bass about a year ago and was really suprised. Stage size was small, and this was the hire rig they gave us - it workeed well. Since then they have upgraded to a GK 4x10 cab with a Ashdown ABM400 head and a JBL 15" sub - that unit cranks! My MM5 was shaking the windows in the hotel foyer with unbelievable tone.

My personal rig is an Ashdown ABM 500 head with a SWR 4x10 quadbox - MusicMan + Ashdown amps is the way!:)

I use a 400rb head. I really like it, and also don't feel I haveta be a 'tube guy' when it comes to bass. Given proper funds, I'd be a SWR guy tho, no question, hands down.:)
Oh yeah, sumtimes I preamplify it with an old Fender showman GUITAR head, fer growl and warmth. I seldom bother thou, jes toying around.

ok, my well used 3 years old WM15 with my MM, have far supirior sound to a person i know(and hate)s 210RB..or what ever it is the 2x10 combo..

O man, he was pissed, cuz he spent too much money on his amp...and i had more volume...but then again i have more experiance, so i don't know. i'd have to use his...

BTW, i think most amps do that shake everthing effect...except my friends Fender.

Re: GK

Any GK I have played just sounds cheap to me, I was comparing amps not too long ago and hit up several SWR and GK amps, the SWR was lightyears ahead.

I AGREE 110 percent. I don't feel like the GK has the same full sound that the SWR amps have. The way i feel in this situation, is that you get what you pay for.

Ampeg is ok, but i'd rather spend the extra money to get an amp that'll last me for ever.(Not even exadurating)

GK Heads

I recently jumoed back into playing and have a MM SR (not sure of year, it is the pearl blue tone). For a head I picked up a GK 700RB and I purchased the SVT 610 bottom.

While I tried several ampeg heads, I fell back to the GK due to great experience in my last bass life. This whole thing comes down to personal preference. I mean, the tonal variation of the MM can take literally just about any amp and make it sound 1/2 way decent.

Most gigs I play have a full 3-way PA system, therefore my stage setup is altered so I don't bleed the PA. Personally, I have found that for club gigs, anything over a 12" speaker bleeds through the pa when I turn it up loud enough to hear it myself.

Again though, it is personal preference. Each of the heads mentioned here is a high quality rig, they all have some impressive sounds.

Being that I just sold my COMPLETE SWR rig.I know play out of the new GK 20001 RB head, and Aguilar 2x12 enclosure, this particular setup does major justice for all my basses especially the SR5.not that my SWR didn't do the job I just wanted something diiferent.I've always like GK heads because they're pretty much idestructible!

As far as a combo amp.I personally play through a Peavey KB-keyboard amp-(which has a 12' in it)and a Radial J48 DI box which sounds AWSOME.

I like using keyboard amps instead of bass combo amps because I think they have a better focus and they handle the low-end little better than bass combo amps IMO.However the SWR Redhead is an awsome combo and so is the Ea 350 combo amp(1200 watts programmable ! but we're talking well over 1200.00 bucks for both of these little 'powerhouses).I think you can find a good deal on a used Redhead on E-bay which I think would be a better choice over th GK combo, but if it is a Gk that you want then go for it.

Good Luck !
