Hi,

I am a newbie here..:) I am from Malaysia and I am interested with Musicman guitars especially the Silhouette Special and Luke model. The other thing that draws me to EBMM is their history. ^_^

I wanted to ask a question. The Luke model comes with string gauge .09 - .42, has anyone chnage their gauge to .10 - .46? I am currently using an Epiphone Les Paul standard and string gauge .10 - .46 so I am used to that gauge. Is it advisable to change the string gauge on the Luke?? Well, i haven t bought it yet and havent try them yet but I have been reading reviews and comments from the internet especially in this forum. Lots of good positive comments on the Luke, well not just the Luke but all of the guitar that EBMM makes :)

Hi...

:) Normally, you can switch to .10 - .46 gauge, but then you must setup truss rod and intonation.

It isn't hard to set the guitar up for a different string gauge. I'd also wait and see if you do get the guitar, it will feel different than your Les Paul, and you may just like it better with the 9's.
The Les Paul has a shorter scale length (24 3/4"), so 9-42's on the Luke (25.5" scale) will feel pretty similar in terms of tension.

A bit of adjustment in the truss rod and bridge should do it. I have one of my Lukes set to gauge 10, and it sounds and feels real nice. So much so that I might change the others to 10's, which Is a pain because not long ago I bought a box of 15 gauge 9's. Do'h lol

Welcome to the forum :)

I use 10-46s on my two Lukes and my Silhouette.
No problems at all, didn't even need to adjust the truss rod... Maybe a quick tweek of the bridge, depending on whether you want it to float or not, but it was a very simple/straight forward process. Don't stress it.

They are great guitars, i just love all of mine.

Tangerine Pearl was only introduced earlier this year, so there aren't really many guitars out there in that colour, apart from the NAMM demo models.
I quite like it though!

10-42s sound great on my two Lukes. 9's are just way too flappy for my liking. I'm actually going to up one of them to 11s like my strat and les Paul and see how it feels.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies.:) Will post some pics when I get it. Most probably will order in next two months, and it will take about 3 months for it to arrive. Can't wait...

Absolutely correct.9's on the Luke will feel almost the same as 10's on a Les Paul.

While I use 10's on other guitars, I tried 10's on my Luke twice and didn't like it at all. Its a wank machine...should feel all loosey goosey...stayed with 9's
