What does having a good battery have to do with putting it in backwards?

Polarity is an issue with lots of things.
No big surprise to blow up the preamp by installing a battery backwards.

I always change my batteries around every other string change. I have also never had to even deal with a dead battery but I would also never change a battery during a show. Actually, if I am doing a show, every bass gets a new battery right before we perform. If one battery is bad, chances are the ones in the other basses are not and I will just grab one of them instead.

is there a special way to get the battery compartment open on a Big Al ?

There is not a special way to open it. Just pry the tab open. It might be a little difficult the first couple of times but it works itself out as you "break it in"
