It was actually "Relay For Life", a thing for cancer survivors - fairly noble, although it annoys me that they bitch if we smoke. I was thinking, well, look, cancer survivors, hey, go complain about the SUN, would you? Or combustion engines, if you must!

But I was good and did without my Winstons for the duration.

I'm a survivor myself and have been participating in my local Relay for Life for the past 6 years or so. So if anyone wants to know:

Relay For Life is an overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for research and programs of your American Cancer Society. During the event, teams of people gather at schools, fairgrounds, or parks and take turns walking or running laps. Each team tries to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. Funds are raised with donations toward "Luminaria" which are candles lit in memory of an individual lost to cancer or in honor of the survivor. the luminaria line the track, are lit after dusk and typically last the night. It's fairly inspirational while you're walking laps at 3:30 am

Our program runs June 10/11 from noon to 6:00 am. I typically start the day at noon with my team and walk for an hour or so then return for the 5:00 pm survivor walk and stay walking on the track for 13 consecutive hours. This year I may try to stay out for the full 18, depends on my knees.

I've done that type of gig quite a few times myself. Yeah, good thing it wasn't raining. Good thing also that the sky wasn't clear & the sun was beating down full force!

I'm a survivor myself and have been participating in my local Relay for Life for the past 6 years or so.

My old band in Oz played the Relay gig in Adelaide 2 years ago. Our guitarist is missing a kidney because of the big C.

This was our second year to do it and we're grateful to have been invited, but the organizer really put the screws to us this year (obviously - we played before the thing really got started this year).

Now last year it was fine. We played at 7 or so and had a good crowd and were off by 9. Problem was, the organizer booked his OWN band to play after us and everyone sort of disappeared after we were done.

So, um, we didn't exactly know that there would be no one around at 3 pm, and his band was scheduled to play later in the evening.

Very tricky.

I guess that will be our last Relay gig unless the management changes.

oh man - playing in a punk band in SF puts me in a lot of situations where youre up there playing your ass off to about a dozen people. it kinda sucks and gets discouraging ... so i definately feel ya Jack.

its almost made me wanna quit. but then you have a kick ass gig and its all good again.

this music thing can be frustrating - but its soooo damn fun at the same time

Just remember... if no one throws anything solid, it must be considered a sucessful gig. And sometimes it is not how many you play to.. but who. Or was that the other way around ? My memory just ain't the same since I caught that beer bottle in the face my gramma threw at my last gig!!! ......Now what did you want?



I personally think Cowpilot is cool as ****!!! I just wish you guys would play up in the NW!!!
