Gigging the 30th..hmmmmm!

I've had a good work out on the 30th tonight. Learning some new stuff for the band, doing some stuff for myself. Bit of Jamerson Motown, played along to "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life", even with my practice amp at low volume I can get the exact tone from the record. I'm really impressed with the sound of this bass. The sound is very versatile, more suited to funk/dance though than my 20th, which is more rocky. It also plays like a dream and looks fantastic, retro in a cool kind of way.

Having said that though, I'm not sure I can bring myself to gig with it. It's too lovely to get knocked and chipped, as it will gigging in rough North East UK pubs.

Am I being a wimp?

Yea, that's always a dilemma playing out a treasured bass. When a drunk chick nearly tipped over my '79 Sabre last year, I decided it wasn't worth it anymore. My 2000 SR gets most of the work now. Not sure what I'm going to do when the martini bass gets here.

Perhaps I should explain:

Before I played a 30th for myself, I thought that they were JUST really nice looking StingRays. Boy was I wrong. of course they look great, but those 30ths sound Monster and play like a million bucks. No diss on standard Stingrays, but those 30ths are truly extra special in comparison. If I owned one, there's no way I could keep it out of the fight.

Although i'd like one I can't really afford a 30th but my "regular" Honeyburst SR4 is damned beautiful IMO. That being said i've gigged with it in some pretty seedy places. Of course I would be a little bummed if a guitar player rammed a Les Paul headstock into it, but it plays and sounds so well how could I not gig with it? So I guess what i'm trying say is ....take it out for a night and see what happens.I bet you'll end up using it all the time

I've played hundred(s) of shows with varying basses, I've never once accidentally hurt an instrument.

I don't use stands, i use cases, I never let it leave my sight.


I say gig with it, it's only a bass after all. If i ever get back into playing live, my 30th will be the captain bass.


Did you buy it for a collector piece or as a real bass? If you got it for a collector piece, better put a clock face on it and hang it up.


I will say this, I've got two cases for my 30th, the fancy one which stays in the closet and a plastic std MM case that I haul it around in.



just take care of your stuff, don't take it for granted that people won't mess with your stuff.

I gigged my SR5 for over a year and I promised to beat hell out of the first guy that put a scratch on it( including me). It resides unmarked from playing while the Bongo 5 H is getting all dinged up. I reckon I could only be careful so long but it can be done.

ive put more dings in my instruments at home than at gigs...

my buttercream Sterling has a nice gash i put in it.. i was putting a bass away in the spot next to it on my rack stand and the stap button hit the poor sterling and put a nice gash in it. oops - i shoulda turned the lights on... my bad - im lazy

i had a prs guitar on a stand in my room. while on the computer i was yawning, leaned back and hit the headstock and it took a dive. but at a gig the bass is chillin in a case, i play it, put it in the case, then back in the car

thats been my experience... even when there's been crazy mosh pits etc my bass has been safe n sound in my hands on stage... its not like the crowd's throwing shards of metal at teh stage

Yeah Live a Little, have a few in each color, I have learned, never again worry about wardrobe, I have a Bass in every color so somethings bound to match, lol
