Thanks Randy, I'm a watching both of those now and a few others as well. I'm in no hurry and will swoop in for the kill when I catch a fat one.:D

I played thru an Ampeg Porta Bass head at the jam last night, I don't want one of those, but it was a lower watt one, a 250 I think, but it was very weak for that gig.

I've been looking at the Neo cabs... G.A.S. is a serious problem...

I opened one time for a kid that had a 400 whatever GK into a 2x12. He covered a big gig easily with it and sounded good. He had an SR4 plugged into it.

GK stuff is good stuff I know. I don't play it but I know. tk
I routinely play the 400RB-III to Portabass 1x12 or 2x10 [4ohm with horns]. These are only 93db efficiency and the 400w is plenty for medium size places. With better efficiency [97db or even 100] I can imagine some major air motion.

If they had the PB head, was it also a PB cab? PB cabs are very inefficient. I like the tone and portability cuz I don't need huge power. Usually I feed the cabs 400w [GK or Eden] but I use 250's as spares [PB or Clarus] and there's not really a big loss at 250 vs 400, just noticeable, nothing huge.

Point is, you may find that 400w is cool, save money and save weight. *IF* the cab that you used with the PB250 head was a PB series cab, you really heard the worst case situation for sound level at 250w. An efficient cab at 400w would be a major hike in volume.

The cabs were Hartke (I think) a 15 and a 210 . They can sound good, I've heard them with a different head a few times before. I'm wanting a very light weight rig, but I want the best sounding too... is it really possable?

Define best possible sound. It can be done. I do believe that would be different for each of us.

The real key to best sound. Play the correct notes.

I want plenty of low end and punch and thump. I sort of want to feel the sound, even at lower volumes.

The correct notes always is best, but sometimes my batting average is pretty low. :D

I'm dying to check out the new tube amp from GK that Rand has been raving about since NAMM. This may convert this loyal AMPEG man. idunno...

Just my two cents. My 1999 800RB is such a sweet amp. It really comes alive the louder it gets. You would think it was rated at 3 times the power that it is. I use an Eden 2X10T and 1X15 and the amp can eat the speakers for lunch if I'm not careful. My stage sound just growls! It has the perfect "sweet spot" mids that cut through and even in a rack with no fan, it never has given me an ounce of trouble.

Theres a reason despite, all the new models, GK keeps making them.

It's definitely are departure from the typical GK tone. It's a bit darker and fuller but it doesn't really go into heavy overdrive.I just hope I have the scratch to pick one up when they are available. I definitely don't wanna give up one of my 3 MM basses to get one:eek: especially when my 1001RBII works just fine

Psycho--

My 400RB died after 16 years of loyal service... after farting around with an Ampeg (which I coulda got used-- great deal 'til I saw the price tag for repairing the sucker and replacing some OLD tubes), decided to trash it and go back to GK.

The 800 is a perfect fit to my Sterling. It's hooked up to an Ampeg 15/10/horn set-up. I have an Eden 2x10 I'm reconing soon just to see what that sucker can do bi-amped.

Wouldn't trade it for the world... (but might trade it for a candy apple red lefty Bongo j/k)
