Does Ernie Ball offer gloss finish for necks? I'm okay with gunstock oil finish, but I prefer gloss necks. I wish my sterling has a gloss neck...mmm...

I guess you can always put a gloss on yourself or have a professional do it. Personally, I hate gloss finishes...makes your had stick when they get sweaty.

Okay, I have a follow-up question - my 1990 EB Stingray did not have a gloss neck but it also did not have the neck finished like the current batches do - with the line where the neck meets the headstock.
What was the finish on my '90 called and what is the current batch called? To be honest, the current finish has always reminded me of a sock on the headstock with that line wrapping around the neck. It feels nice but I think I still prefer my 90's finish. I remember anyone who touched that neck ALWAYS made a comment on how nice the neck felt (both the profile and finish).

Zuma, I'd say someone has removed the gloss finish from the neck of your '90 'Ray. Or it is worn down to the wood (but then you'd see a difference between the headstock and the back of the neck). You can seal the wood with a finish that's similar to oil & wax but actually a poly coating. However, that will wear down as other finishes do.

Oli, my post wasn't clear. I don't own the 1990 Stingray anymore. I bought it brand spankin' new from Guitar Center and I sold it like an idiot years later (I'm still looking for it - the buddy I sold it to disappeared).
I distinctly remember it did not have the "sock" line like current EB's do. I would say it felt more satin finish than glossy finish. My question is what where they officially described as? Or...when did EB start doing the "sock" treatment?
Edit: After reading your post again Oli, I assume that what I would call Satin is actually the Gloss finish, yes? It's certainly not a thick Gloss finish like most Fenders if that's the case.

Back in 1990 the necks were finish with a Velvet laquer.

Then Velvet Lacquer is what I want! It was the best of both worlds. A natural satin feel with no sock line.

My '92 SR5 has a satin finish on the neck and it's wonderful. With a lot of playing it will wear down though.
Some lacquer finishes are good and some get sticky real fast. I haven't played a lacquered MM neck so I can't say but I am totally stoked about a figured neck on the new retro model... I miss those!

I have two SR5's sitting here right now. The '95 have the oil/wax, and the '90 still has the laqured neck.

Tell me more...I'm looking for a new stingray and my first thought was to get the neck refinished. I owned a '92 SR5 with a satin tint urethane finish, and they used a birdseye maple neck...my god why did I ever sell that bass!
