New York Times article:

Mickelson and Kim Lead Off and Set Tone for Surging Americans

By BILL PENNINGTON
Published: September 19, 2008

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Anthony Kim waved his hat in the air and raised his arms. He ran through the crowd between the tees and slapped the hand of every fan he could reach. He smiled and hooted and bowed to the crowd. And that was just on the 13th hole.

On other holes, the 23-year-old Kim hugged his playing partner, Phil Mickelson, slapped the back of his caddie with such force it knocked a club out of the caddie’s hands and occasionally charged around the greens making such powerful fist pumps it was easy to forget that you-know-who, the world’s No. 1 player, was not at the 2008 Ryder Cup.

Mickelson was once paired with Tiger Woods in this event, with disastrous results. On Friday, Mickelson was twice paired with Kim, a player some have called the next Tiger Woods, and the pair successfully breathed life into a United States Ryder Cup team that desperately needed a strong first day.

The team of Kim and Mickelson tied the Europeans Padraig Harrington and Robert Karlsson in the morning foursomes matches, with Kim sinking a decisive putt on the 18th hole. Later, Kim and Mickelson again took on Harrington, one of the European team’s top players, defeating him and his partner, Graeme McDowell, 2 up, in a four-ball match.

Most impressive, Kim and Mickelson were down by three holes in each match and rallied to earn a total of 1 ½ points, or more than a quarter of the points won by the United States team, which leads Europe, 5 ½-2 ½.

But it was Kim’s spirit, apparent fearlessness and unbridled enthusiasm in the midst of what is usually a tense competition that captivated the galleries, his teammates and even his opponents. On a team of six veterans, none on whom has a career winning Ryder Cup record, Kim is the rookie who has become the new face of the team. Symbolically, Kim and Mickelson went out as the first American team in the morning matches and did the same in the afternoon. They have quickly become leaders and will play together again Saturday morning.

Kim may be the most popular American player. The usual grandstand chants of “U.S.A.!” morphed into “Go A. K.!”

A. K., in his words, “was just having a blast out there.”

“I felt like I was playing for the Lakers in the N.B.A. championship,” said Kim, who was born in Los Angeles. “You don’t get to feel like part of a team very often in golf. I’m just running with it.”

Mickelson, whose record with Ryder Cup playing partners was 6-9-4 before Friday, might have made more big putts and crucial shots than Kim in the two matches, but he appeared relieved to be ceding the spotlight to the 5-foot-10 sparkplug that Kim became on the Valhalla Golf Club grounds.

“Anthony has a youthful exuberance that’s infectious,” Mickelson said after the afternoon four-ball match. “He’s just having fun out there and the crowd likes that. And keeping the crowd in it was one of our big goals on the first day.”

The body language of some European players suggested they were less than enthusiastic about the Americans’ playing to the crowd, but Harrington was not among them.

“Anthony is a young fellow and he was enjoying himself and that was good to see,” Harrington said. “He’s young and he’s excited. He played great. He hardly missed a shot out there.”

And while it was true that Kim made the 5-footer on the 18th green that halved the first match of the day, and while he also made a spectacular approach shot on the par-3 14th hole and sank the 8-footer that gave his team its first lead of the afternoon match, it was Mickelson who made the most important putt of that afternoon match.

On the par-4 17th hole, Mickelson pulled his tee shot into foot-high rough. He lofted his next shot 140 yards over two trees and onto the front of the green. From about 25 feet, he then sank his birdie putt. Kim had been waiting to make his birdie attempt from about six feet.

“Anthony was a little upset because I stole his thunder,” Mickelson said in an obvious joke. When Mickelson’s putt rolled in, Kim ran across the green slapped hands and embraced Mickelson.

As much as Kim provided the new blood, Mickelson might have been the calming influence when things were not going as well for them. Kim and Mickelson were down three holes to Harrington and Karlsson with only six holes to play, then won the next three holes to pull even. When they fell behind by three holes again after only four holes of the afternoon match, Mickelson counseled his young partner:

“I told him we had 14 holes to play and that’s a whole lot better than being down three holes with only six holes to play. We had already survived that. I felt we could survive again.”

Kim said: “I was calm all day. What did I have to worry about? I was playing with Phil Mickelson.”

This is the only thing that makes me interested in golf, a chance to see BP! :D

Aww come on Chuck, ya gotta admit that was an exciting game. And did you see Boo riding his putter like a pony? Might give you some ideas for your next photo shoot. :D

:D That's wonderful all the way around. He sounds like a great personality as well as an extremely talented player -- I looked up golf rankings and saw he was ranked #10 in the world. For someone so young and full of energy and positive thoughts, there's only one way to go. Congratulations to you all!
