What a difference the ebony board makes!

Now it's really the guitar of metal doom!

I actually think that's rosewood, just a darker shade. The shade on my JP is pretty dark too. You can tell especially if you look at the upper frets. But even still, it does make a big difference!

Well spotted, closer inspection shows that may well be RW type grain.

Still shows that the much darker colour definately suits the stealth better

I may be in the minority here but I prefer rosewood that is not too dark. Love some color variations in the grain. I do not mind some orange red swirling around the brown rosewood. Some people want dark rosewood that almost looks like ebony. Nothing wrong with that at all. Just not for me.

Me like rosewood too.

I refuse to believe I am wrong with calling it ebony! :)

I've never played an ebony fretboard either, so am interested in the new Dargies.

No, I'm with you there. Lighter shades of brown on rosewood is gorgeous. My whilte Silo Spec is actually very light shaded... After the amount of playing its gone through, it's a wee bit darker I think, but I wonder what it would be like if it was brand new.

heh... it is indeed RW... Ebony would have a tigher grain, depending on the breed. The Madagascar Ebony would be more brownish with dark streaks. This JP stealth you posted is definately RW.

I'm with you... Ebony is a WAY tighter grain. I would bet it's rosewood.

Haha who knows, maybe it was hit with some wonderwipes just prior to the pictures.

There's this Pearl Redburst JP at my local GC, and it has a very light rw board, which I think looks great with that color.

I agree, black guitars look better with dark boards. But on everything else I love the streaks of brown and golden.

the irony of it all is: now they let me buy a JP with ebony at a normalish price but the neck is finished...

here's ebony from the for sale thread. notice the tightness and how dark it is, even under intense flash.

I'm surprised you look at it only from the "look and feel" side. Rosewood and ebony got different tonal property and feels diffrent to play. I have a stealth bongo and I like the rosewood neck ont it because of it's smoothness.

I had Enony fretboard guitars in the past but I prefer Rosewood

I'm a fan of both Ebony and Rosewood. When it comes to rosewood, though, I like to see variations in the color, and I like it on the lighter side.

At first, I thought the darker example above was ebony, but I'm leaning to the rosewood side now. The grain is just too coarse to be ebony.

No matter what it is, the darker color looks better with the Stealth finish.

These two guitars have been speculated about before. Someone should call the store and ask for either serial numbers and/or DOB. If the guitar was born before Feb/March '09 then it is rosewood. Ebony wasn't offered until January NAMM '09, and wouldn't have shipped out for a month or two (provided the second one isn't a NAMM piece w/ebony built in Jan).
