My Lukes rosewood board is as dark as that, and some companies use dyes and such to make dark boards. Would you believe Martin uses 3 in 1 oil on their rosewood bridges.

They both look like rosewood boards to me as well. Manufacturers have been known to stain rosewood to look darker, and I'm not implying this was done...however the possibility exists.

The type someone mentioned earlier (which is actually Macassar not madagasgar !) is full of beautiful streaks (I own another guitar with macassar on it) but even that is easily distinguishable from rosewood.

well, if they stained rosewood (which, imho, they don't) wouldn't they stain ALL the boards instead of just the random few? basscentral and TPG both have stealths with not so dark rosewood.

Look guys, in ALL my RW board Balls, there is a large variance in colour. there are light coloured boards, as well as very dark coloured ones.

If you saw my 20th (the one I got from petruccirocks), you'd swear it was ebony, because that one is almost black, and the colour is uniform throughout.

Then again, if you saw my previous 20th (the one I got from Norrin Radd), that one was very very light coloured, to the point it looked orange.

And if you look at my JP6, that one is just uniformly brown. Not quite black, and not quite orange either.

So while EBMM doesn't stain their boards, they do have quite a bit of colour variance, and I'm not surprised at all by the 2 examples shown in the first post.

Yeah, I hear you. My rosewood boards are all over the place too. They go from super dark to really light and all points inbetween.
