How long have you been playing the bass?

i dont know the real answer to that .... i first got a bass in 1994, i think. so, the short answer is "on and off for 11 years now"

the long answer:

I initially played a lot in highschool, then went to college without it. 2nd year in college i brought it with me and played a little bit, then played guitar instead for a while, finished college, moved home, didnt play for almost a year, started a band and played a lot of bass, quit band and didnt play for a few months, started new band, played a lot again, quit that band about 6 or 7 months ago and ive played about 20-30 minutes a week in the last few months ... hence the "scraping off the rust".

im assuming this is a decently common pattern. i love bass (and guitar) but sometimes i go thru runs when either work's crazy or i have a girlfriend etc where i just dont play very much but i always come back to it

Thought you were playing with your fingers because of the sound: it is very clean. I use heavy pics (like 1.5 to 2.0) and have more pic noise ; are you using thiner pics to have that sound (or maybe I just have to improve my play) ?
Anyway, great job, and being able to play "hallowed by the name" with your fingers means your also a good finger player (needs to be precise and fats).

Let us know for your audition !

i use the orange dunlop tortex picks most of the time ... sometimes i use the green ones if i want a beefier pick and even more rarely ill use the yellow ones.

most gigs with my last band id run thru about 4 of the orange ones and have one or 2 songs that id use the green pick for. when i get into it i destroy picks ... but mostly im anal about the picks shape and find them useless when theres a few dents in em ...

Sometimes in boxing all it takes is to "let your hands go"...

Stay loose and "let your fingers go" - and give us the good news! :)

so the audition's tomorrow and i practiced for the first time since i recorded that last clip (damn work getting in the way of good stuff). so I learned the 3 songs that i have MP3s for and have a decent idea where to toss fills in ... i dont like practicing fills, i just kinda let em go (like adelucia said above - yup, sometime there's some trainwreckage :))

anyways ... its late and i gotta unplug now so i might be done LoL
wish me luck.

i heard there's 4 other folks auditioning; man i hate it when this stuff turns into a competition

That is going to have to be one sick bass player to beat you out of this gig. Good luck and I hope you pass the audition.

thanks for all the kind words folks.

so here's the update ... auditions at 9pm tonight. sweet
now who what's the hear the crappy news?!?

ok so they have an amp there, so i dont have to lug my rig - sweet.
the amp doesn't have an active input!!!! booooo

this means that I have to take a Fe&d*r with me instead of my beloved Sterling. F*%K. so i dont hate the P and the J too much but i dont wanna deal with stuff like "dammit this neck doesnt feel right" and "hmmm this tone is thin" during an audition.

anywho ... on a plus side, one of the dudes from the band emailed and IMed me today and he checked out my demos for the first time and liked em a lot. so ive got high hopes

so the audition went pretty damn well im pretty happy with how it went ...

the 2 noteworthy quotes from the audition were:
drummer said: "alright, looks like he can play the bass"
guitarist said: "dude, you sang backups with your pick in your mouth?"

so that was cool. i also let a couple fills and runs rip and got a few "woah" kinda looks from the guys in the band.

as far as the amp goes. so it turns out they share the room and the peavey ...combo was the crappy amp but there was also a good one too. I ended up playing an SVT 4 with a 2x10 mesa + 2x12 cab (i forget what it was). I used a Fender J since i was under the impression id be using an amp w/o the -15db. it actually sounded good ... i was impressed

anyways ... it went really well so im hopeful that i got the gig. it just felt amazing to play loud ass music. it was just awesome. ill let y'all know what happens as soon as i hear from 'em.
