I'm going to add Mark Bedford of Madness. Very much one of my favorites, although I have a tendency to forget to mention him.

Wyzard, the bass player for Mother's Finest. Saw him in the late '70's and he's the first bass player I ever took notice of.

I'm glad someone mentioned Abe Laboriel. I've liked this guy's style since the 70s.

A name I'd like to add is Oscar Stagnaro. www.oscarstagnaro.com

This guy puts well thought out theory into everyone of his basslines, and it always sounds great. He also knows just what a song needs; keep it busy, or just lay back. I have two albums with him playing with The Caribean Jazz Project, and two with him playing with Paquito D'Rivera. So good! ;)

If we're talking upright, I like Ron Carter, Christian McBride and John Patitucci.

I consider McBride and Patitucci to be equal, with different styles.

Is anyone into Max Bennett? www.maxbennett.com

Greates

John Entwistle (THe WHo) w/o him the whole idea of the bassist having such complex parts wouldnt exist. plus he's a pretty damn good bassist too. And the fact that people might mention Paul MccCArtney is an insult. Also Geddy Lee of rush and Les Claypool of primus are great. Jaco Pastorius too, and Flea is pretyy good but not top five. James Jamerson is also great, he played for a lot of funk bands

John Myung FTW.

Not to mention, that guy from...that band? What's his name...oh yeah! Dan Briggs from Between the Buried and Me. While I'm still trying to stomach the unneccessarily painful vocals, that man's got crazy bass chops.

Andrew Gouché and Terrance Palmer are really skilled bass players

Yeah, and Abraham Laboriel, check out his techniques!

My earliest influence was Jack Bruce. Can't believe no one's mentioned him. He made want to play bass. Don't know how many guys could play like he plays while singing as beautifully as he does (sorry Geddy Lee) - melodic on both at the same time - simply amazing.

I loved Jaco, but when I first saw Stanley Clarke in the 70's I was completely blown away. I did not know a bass could be played like that.

Now - at least for me - it's Mighty Dave LaRue. I have heard no one who can do all the things he does on bass, and every time I see him play, he is better than the time before.
