Since everyone is on the subject of greatests guitarists i thought us bassists might like to share our major influences. The obvious choices are Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorius, Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller, etc. Flea has his talents too but I actually like it when he plays trumpet more. Colin Greenwood and Paul McCartney stand out to me for their down-to-the-basics mastery of bass playing. I didn't mean to forget Billy Sheehan! I'm excited to learn other peoples favorites. I'm might hear of some I've never known about. :D . Have fun!

Pete Trewavas from Marillion is exceptional (especially on TransAtlantic's SMPTe album)

Roscoe Beck or Kyle Brock who back up Eric Johnson....

Andy West, Dave LaRue, Jerry Peek who play with Steve Morse & co.

John Entwistle from The Who...

Or a hot bag of nickels......

I just saw Dave LaRue with Steve Morse not too long ago and he was awesome. Even Steve would stop playing and watch Dave just throw down. I would say he is one of the greatest. He is one of my favorites for sure.

I'm with Koogie on this. I also saw Morse for the first time live last month and was as impressed with Dave as I was with Steve. Then I went back and really listened to the bass playing on my Morse CD's - outstanding

the only thing that ****s me with bass playing is victor wooten, he has set the bar too high fo HSC students trying to get a decent bass mark. (namely, me)

the head examiner for our area is a victor wooten fan, so unless you play some tripped out turbo jazz, you cant get above 80!

/rant

but top 5...in no order

1. Jaco
2. Flea
3. Tony L
4. Dave L
5. paul mccartney
