So, after a ton of research, I decided on a JPX-6 (you know, chambered body, pickup selection diversity, etc.). $2450 is the common retail price for a new one, which is a bit steep for me. I found two used models at out-of-state Guitar Center stores, one at $1800 the other at $1900.

I called about the $1800 one, and it did not have the original BFR case - just a plain TSA-style MM case. My OCD kicked in and automatically told my brain "no" to that one.

I called about the $1900 one. It had the original BFR case (good start). According to the sales guy on the phone describing a guitar that sat approximately 1500 miles away from me, it was in "perfect" "clean" "incredible" condition without scratches or blemishes. Okay, so I took it. I figured I'd save $550, considering my tight budget.

Except, they charged tax and shipping. So, the final total was $2072. Okay, well, I'm still saving $378. Right?

*sigh*

My trusty, friendly UPS guy delivers the guitar yesterday, and I open it with a bit of nervous anticipation. Will this really be a good deal?

Nope.

The case was mostly good, except it had a small snag in the faux leather covering. Okay, no biggie, I tell myself. I open the case to find a very smudged JPX with small amounts of white, waxy gunk in some of its crevices. The fretboard also seemed to have a slight layer of *something* on it. Oh, and a small dent on the face of the headstock of this "perfect," "clean," "incredible" guitar. And the LiquiFire pickup was loose. And when I opened the storage compartment inside the case there was nothing. No paperwork. No trem springs. No case keys. And NO TREM ARM.

I called MM and ordered a new trem arm for $27.50 (after shipping, which would take a week). And I was planning on getting a guitar care kit with body polish and lemon oil for the fretboard (which I don't already have because my other guitars have maple boards and I always wipe down the bodies after use) for another $20. Those extra expenses brought my frugal used guitar purchase savings down to $330, which is only a 13% savings over just buying a new one.

So, I called my local Guitar Center's manager and explained the situation. I will return the used JPX and he is going to refund me the entire purchase amount, including the shipping I paid, since I told him I am going to order a brand new JPX in exchange. He also agreed to waive the sales tax on the new JPX, so I can get it for $2450 out the door (which I told him I could if I bought it almost anywhere else online).

This makes me happy and far less disappointed in my latest purchase with GC.

Just for the record, the last out-of-state used guitar I purchased from GC was a completely different experience. I bought a used Fender American Deluxe Precision bass for $999 (new price $1699) that was in such amazing condition that it still had the pickguard plastic and promo stickers. It also had all of the case candy and paperwork. I had that shipped to my local GC store so I could pick it up there and not have it sitting on my porch for someone to steal. As soon as I opened the case, one of the customers came over to me and wanted to buy it. I couldn't part with it considering the deal I got on it!

As has been documented here before YMMV on those types of purchases. I also got lucky and bought my Reflex (my avatar pic) from GC used for a RIDICULOUS price and the thing was in MINT condition other than a dirty fretboard. I'm glad you decided on the new one - smart move. And kudos to GC for taking care of you. Congrats!!

Sometimes you wonder if they really know how to price some used instruments. I don't know if it's still there, but GC had a used BFR JP6 with the quilted maple top in cherry/sunburst (not sure the exact MM name of the color) for $1800, and those things are ~$3000 brand new.

Keep your eye out on here and other forums for a nice used one if you don't want to spend the $2450 on a new one.

Yea buying used gear in my experience is all over the map, real hit and miss, depending on the specific sales person.

Sorry you had grief.

I think I got mine for right at $2k new, delivered, fr MF. That's the bear with dealing with GC, they're everywhere, so the bad is you gotta always pay tax, but the good is you can always return it easily.

Thanks for the well wishes, everyone.

Soooo... I actually ordered a Majesty instead.

I have had my eye on the white version. For the heck of it, before I went out to GC to return the used JPX, I checked GC's site, and they had one in their Orlando store. Instead of mulling it over any further, I just pulled the trigger on the Majesty. While the JPX is definitely awesome (especially with the 5-way pickup selector) there's something about the "newness" of the Majesty model with the neck-thru design and pre-amp booster that won out.

GC did treat me right. They refunded all of my money (including shipping) on the JPX and sold me the Majesty without tax and with next day shipping. It should be here tomorrow afternoon. I'll post pics when it's been set up and ready to go.

i had a similar situation happen...

I was looking for a rare Silhouette Special in Mint Green... and saw a used one pop up on the east coast... i'm on the west...

So playing it and seeing it first was not possible...

Fortunately Pete DuBaldo saw my post and offered to drive across town to check it out for me...

He was my eyes and ears and I was very Lucky to get a full report... i knew there was a very tiny pressure mark that is almost unnoticeable but pete found it ... i knew the bridge pickup was swapped and didn't really "go with the guitar" to Pete but it wasn't "BAD" just a bit different...

I decided i could live with the pickups and swap them out as i knew what i wanted anyway since it wasn't the full original set...
and i still have a hard time finding the pressure point...

I'm very lucky and know it could have easily gone the other way for sure...

Glad GC is refunding the money and hopefully you'll have your new guitar soon...

Bought all of mine from a brick and mortar store, never know what happens to used guitars.......the previous owner could be a chronic butt picker.

Wow, unbelievable. When I deal with GC, I tend to have them send me pictures, if I like it, I then have them ship it to a GC close to me, so I can see it first hand.

That's exactly what I did with my Reflex. Worked out great.

Greg - Awesome that you chose the Majesty! Great choice!

About 75% of the time if I contact a GC to have them send me better/more pics of a used guitar, I get ignored.

I was talking with the GC employee helping me yesterday and he said the company is currently restructuring its used gear web site to include more pictures and details.

That's good but I hope they would at least include a picture for some guitars as there are more and more entries with no picture whatsoever.

If I were in charge (ha ha) every GC store would have at least one person (maybe the assistant manager) in charge of photographing and listing every used item on the site with detailed specs. And I would require at least 5 high quality pics be posted per item, and that every item in the sale be represented in the pics (which includes the case a guitar comes with).

The used Guitar Center photos really are mysteriously poor. Sorry you had the hassle. I think most camera phones can capture the important details... so why do so many GC stores post no photos or out-of-focus ones? My last GC used purchase did turn out great though. It was a G&L Commanche in stunning ash with flametop... also with a single lousy web photo. Before purchasing, I called the store and had someone give me details - and I asked about dings, loose parts, mechanical condition, etc. The process and guitar condition turned out to be perfect (nonetheless, I ended up returning it locally - didn't prefer the neck). I took a gamble with my MM Game Changer buying online from Musician's Friend - sight unseen, just trusting the generic "good condition" label. Also used, and at a fantastic price (and MF charges no tax or shipping!). This one also showed up in perfect condition with all the stickers intact etc. So two recent wins for me. But, really it was quite lucky.

I think assigning one or two digital cameras per store would remove all excuses for not putting photos on the web site. Plus, it's not completely ethical to expect the employees to use their personal phones for company use, even if it's something as innocuous as product photos. That is, unless the employee's phone is partially paid for by GC.

I have had better experiences buying used guitars from eBay than GC. The one exception is my amazing Fender American Deluxe P-Bass that I practically stole from them. The sellers on eBay are usually more motivated to sell because it's their own instruments and eBay allows for more/higher quality photos and detailed descriptions. I ALWAYS call GC to get guitars described to me before purchase, but in the case if the JPX, for instance, it was not accurately described.

Like 99% of mass market retail, the employees are generally (but not always) lazy, unmotivated and generally have very little use for customers. It's a sad state of affairs when I shop for big-ticket products and I always know far more about what I'm shopping for than the salesperson. I can't remember how many times I've shopped for an HDTV, new car and guitars and ended up teaching the salesperson about their own products. This is the beauty of the internet: you can go into a situation like that armed with whatever knowledge you need, and now with a smartphone in your pocket you can pull up any information you need anywhere and anytime you need to.
