I just remembered a band I used to listen to called the Guano Apes, and thought to myself, now that I am familiar with Stingray 5s, that the bassist must have used one.

Yep. He was one of those players that confirmed my decision for EBMM basses... ;)

It's interesting how many punk/hardrock/crossover bass players turn to MusicMan basses. Maybe it's the only basses that don't get lost in a wall of guitars.

I think my decision was ultimately made up by seeing Shannon Birchall of the John Butler Trio using one at two gigs I went to see last year ([ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOdRnUDujz4"]YouTube - John Butler Trio & Keith Urban - Funky Tonight[/ame], they're awesome, Grand National is easily my fav album of the year, he used his Stingray 5 on that though, I'm sure - great example of the mellower side of the instrument!)

The true deciding factor was when I saw him this year at Brixton using a Fender MM sig jazz, and it sounded AWFUL by comparison!! Really shocking. But that confirmed my choice for me. thankfully, as shown in the video above, he's gone back to the 'Ray, obviously having realised it's the stronger instrument.

Synchronicity ... something made me think about the Guano Apes yesterday, so I've had a recent rediscovery, too. Yeah, there's no doubting the bassist's weapon of choice when you hear it. The singer rocked for a wee lass, too. Oh, that's what made me think about them yesterday - I've been listening to Juliette & the Licks lately - Juliette Lewis' band. Another power-house of a wee lass.

Later,
Robert

That tone is sooooo SR5.
Kinda reminds me of the SR5 tone Matt Wong (of reel big fish) gets outta his...really thumpy and punchy, but super bright on the top. Great vid.

Thing is, I didn't even listen to 'em, I just recalled the sound from years ago and now that I'm clued up I had a guess, a total shot in the dark!

Nice pic, Jack. Love the knee-pads. To quote Austin Powers, "Grrrrr baby .... VERY grrrrrrr".

I saw Juliette & the Licks here in San Diego about a week ago. Great show. Their bassist was playing a Jazz, but when you look at the photos in the cd insert, there are some photos of them in the studio making the record, and what's he playin? An SR5. The work-horse - the standard staple of the studio. I guess he thinks his Jazz somehow looks "cooler", maybe more vintage, for gigs. We've gotta do something about that mentality BP! Like you say, get 'em past '53.
