Yikes! Don't know without seeing it. Did you talk to Jon yet? I guess that's what I would have done before posting here.

Definitely hear a buzz, though it sounds pretty minor. This feels a like a low action = some buzzing issue. I suspect you'll need to stiffen up your action/string height to if you want get rid of it.

(Most of my guitars buzz a bit. The age old trade-off.)

Does your JP have the piezo? That sounds like piezo output to me.

+1 if it is piezo I think it will buzz like that, even JP's guitar buzzes on piezo (An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess)...

are those open notes? or i mean, does it only buzz that much when you play it open?
mine did, but it was because i went to a smaller gauge, so getting a new nut set up for 9's fixed it.

i get buzz when i use the piezo though, just from low action...i cant tell if it sounds like yours or not, ill compare it later.

as a side note;
the guys at EB definately prefer if you talk to them (customer service), then bring it up on the forums. but thats just my $.02.

-ross

EDIT: i just read the part where paper in the nut slot cut down on the buzz...totally sounds like a slightly overlarge nut slot.
any competent luthier can fix that, if you dont want to send it back to jon

Although I am at home with a messed up back, I feel the need to respond. Yeah, this is the wrong place to complain, but I want you to know this. Not only did I play your guitar, but the guy who designed it (Dudley)spent time checking it out as well. We both agreed there was no buzzing. Maybe the change in weather from California to your home caused the neck to need a truss rod tweek.

Well Jon,

First of all... I didn't complain at all!! In fact... the opposite, I said you did an awesome job setting it up and I was very impressed. It plays great. Just that one annoying problem. The people that responded can confirm this. I posted here an mp3 of the buzz to see if it was any big deal and how I could correct it without bothering you again. No complaints at all. I deleted my posts because I just took the advice of the guys to not bring it up here anymore. Whatever, I'm tired of justifying myself all the time here. It's just ridiculous... disregard my e-mail to your department as well.

personally i thought the Audio clip was great and i definatly heard the buzz and he was being nice, no rudeness whatsoever and it was a legit concern ,i'm not sure why all the other members asked him not to do so on the forums because it seems like the logical place to ask a question which in reality was all he did,

Lenny-

Big Poppa (Sterling Ball) has repeatedly asked customers with complaints to call the customer service dept rather than posting on the forum, that's why. CS is first-rate and it's their job to keep all the EBMM freaks happy. Jon monitors this forum to help out, but it's not really his job to deal with customer service issues here - he's just one of those guys that always goes above and beyond (e.g. like making sure Dudley played the guitar as well). So that's the scoop. All told, EB does an incredible job of keeping customers happy.

Mooreguitars- I think Jon meant this was the wrong place for complaints, not that you were complaining needlessly. No reason to get upset!

Listen, we want you happy. Please contact customer service and we will make it right. We will issue a pickup and it wont cost you anything. If after the second time you are still unsatisfied then we will talk. Buzzing bugs me too. I pick hard so if the action is too low I get buzzing . Im not being critical of your technique just stating my issues!

Im sorry you feel ganged up on but you once again circumvented our customer service

By coming on here first it will 100% of the time be an unpleasant experience. I thought we covered that last time.

Jon-sorry to hear about your back (aren't you too young for back issues?;) )-I hope you get better soon.

BP-I'm impressed with the "calmness" of your response. It's very big of you to offer the pickup and to "make it right". This, to me, epitomizes the EBMM customer service philosophy-a trait not found in many companies these days.

Finally, I didn't get a chance to hear the clip, but, I agree with Beej-some buzz is normal on a guitar depending how hard you pick. I've got a pretty soft touch, so low action suits me fine. What works for me however won't work for everyone else.

I think the "perfectly setup, buzzless, super low action guitar " is more the ideal than the reality.

Ok, I contacted customer service, BP.... thank you.

Jazzbo Jim... trust me bro, I am absolutely POSITIVE this is a problem with the nut (no one can convince me otherwise, i swear). I accept string buzz here and there. The problem went away with 2 tests... 1. The shim (aka pc. of paper) in between the string and nut slot and buzz went away 2. I put a thicker gauge string in place of the 46 and buzz went away. I've been playing guitar almost 20 years and I know what kind of buzz is acceptable. I work with a grammy award winning mixing engineer and he even told me some tracks were unusable that I sent him with the noise coming through. So, I believe this to be a little bit more than a setup issue as I can make those adjustments (i might not know a lot about setups but definitely not a n00b). Anyway, can we close/lock this thread now cuz it's between me and EB now... (this is the last time I post problems publicly I promise... BP I learned my lesson this time)

Thanks all for input b4 it turned nasty,

Mark

Glad this is on it's way to being fixed. Mark, I know you'll be a happy man when this is done.

BP, you da man, as usual. I'll say hi to your homie JP at his clinic tonight. (Jon, you are, of course, also da man.)

Ok..first, it seems to me like you are only having the problem when the guitar is in the piezo mode. Does it have the same problem with the magnetic p/ups?. If not it probably boils down to a technique thing rather than it being something wrong with the guitar. You may have a heavy hand(like BP) and may need to use a heavier string. Think about it. If there is a problem with the guitar, it would show up either way, piezo or magnetic. I didn't get to hear the clip so I don't know how you were playing. By all means, take BP's offer, and send the guitar back. I will have Dudley look it over again.

BTW, where did it turn nasty?

Acoustically, Piezo, and magnetic (of course loudest on piezo because it is essentially an acoustic sound)... all three though. It's not technique wise, trust me. Actually, I play on the softer side except when playing metal-ish of course. I noticed that THIS specific string can move more in the nut slot than any other string very very very very slightly though (at least the side facing towards the bridge). Believe me I would do everything possible to avoid this problem cuz you gotta trust me it's not fun for me either. Since you are home (sorry about your back - I forgot to say that didn't mean to be rude) you can listen to this and you'll see... first I played 4 notes on open 6th string (2 semi soft, 2 harder) then i applied pressure to the area between the nut and the tuning peg - imagine pushing the string towards the A string if you will. Check this out:

http://home.comcast.net/~moore9876/buzz.mp3

As you can see it comes out pretty well... especially if I doubled it and panned hard left and right. I'm sure you'll hear it.

Nasty = just the vibe I got... didn't mean anything by it.

Mark

Edit: BTW: Setup wise I am very impressed. So smooth man... you really do know your guitars!
