Sold my Axis Super Sport last night after a complete nightmare of an ebay situation. It's a lovely, lovely guitar, but I've come to the conclusion I'm really not a guitarist and it's got two more strings than I really need... and they're much shorter and skinnier than I'm comfortable with.

And there's a double bass I'm after.

It was up on ebay with a reserve of £500 and a BIN of £600. A guy BIN'ed it on Wednesday the 13th, saying he would pay for it on the Monday when he was paid. I thought, "Fine, I've agreed to buy gear in the past when I couldn't yet afford it... he's not quite 'buying it now' but I can wait five days for the money..."

Then an EB forum member contacts me and I have to disappoint him.

Monday came, with an e-cheque. Damn. I hate them. 'Buyer' mails to ask me to send it the next day... no way, not till it's cleared. He gets upset with me thinking it was my fault... I go to great lengths to make sure my paypal account is in order and eventually I phone paypal to make sure it was. They tell me my account is in great shape and the 'buyer's bank had stopped him from making an instant payment, probably due to insufficient funds or a security problem.

The 'buyer' then asks for my bank account details to transfer money... I don't feel comfortable with that and with some apprehension agree to allow the e-cheque to clear. He's voicing some concerns that it won't get there in time as he has to go home to Poland on the 7th September to record his new album. Not a problem, I always post my guitars next day delivery.

Of course the e-cheque bounces.

The 'buyer' then tells me he will add his other bank account's details to his paypal account later that day and make an instant payment. Then suddenly he has a gig that night and will sort out the instant payment tomorrow.

Sorry, but no. I've waited 17 days from the 'Buy it now' button being pressed... no way am I waiting any longer. He doesn't have the money.

So I spoke to the EB forum member who had expressed interest and he came from the other side of the country to pay in cash.

So now this is the property of azazael from these forums...

I hope you enjoy owning it!

Of course I'm now getting arsey emails from the ebay 'buyer' saying he thinks the reason I'm refusing to sell to him is that he thinks I've got a better deal... well yes I did. I sold it for £100 less than the ebay 'buyer' had said he would pay, the better bit of the deal being that I actually have the money.

All of my ebay auctions from now on will stipulate no e-cheques.

Hate E bay - I know a lot of guys here have had good deals - I'd rather do a 900 mile round trip instead to see/buy a guitar (as I did with my EVH).

Anyway, glad you sorted it all out in the end.

Ebay ain't the playground it once was, I have chest pains every time I sell a guitar on eBay - I know I'm on the level it's the other guy that winds me up !

Too many fraudsters and bottom holes making it a bad place, Still can only be good news for struggling music stores, maybe there will be a revolution.

The amazing thing is he turned round and claimed he clearly had the money to pay for it as he is a professional musician. That's absolutely the last thing I'd claim if I was trying to convince somebody I had plenty of money.

Anyway, he's stiffed me for the final fees.

Mods... what are your opinions about naming and shaming on these boards? The guy is certainly on my blocked bidders list and I wouldn't want anyone else being put through this crap.

Hello matey :)

Your forgot to mention I was on my way within a matter of mere hours lol and I got lost

lol

Dude, my dad sold his car on ebay and it was a Polish guy who won auction for £2500 and when he came here he was only prepared to pay £1500. He was very cheeky and everything. My brother was gonna tear his head off lol

Anyway I am so glad I got it.
I know you said it looked like the deal was going to go through and that I should look at other guitars and not get my hopes up but I wasnt interested in buying a guitar at all!! lol
I just saw that and I said I want it! Even if it means not eating this month lol

Hey, you only travelled 30 or so miles in the wrong direction... I wasn't going to mention it. It's lovely countryside up there in the glens, just not too visible at that time of night! :)

I just wish I'd sold it to you sooner! I'm glad you like it!

Of course, nationality has little to do with it...

I just thought it an odd way to get me to send the guitar before the cheque cleared by saying he was leaving the country...

Wasnt sniping Polish people just mentioning only time we had a bad time on ebay. Just coincidence really. Was a waste of time that ended up had to relist and I think had to pay £40 ebay fees even tho he was just a time waster. It sold when relisted for more anyway.

Im liking it.
It feels unusual though!
neck feels skinnier than my other 2 and it feels lighter!

Need to give it a setup though, action far too low! hehe

What? Ebay and nightmare in the same sentence?

I canceled my account over a year ago. Craigslist works great. I delete any responses without a local number (I always say that I'll do that in my ads). I just called on an ad for an EBMM out in western Mass with no price or model listed. Turned out to be an OLP Benji. Already had one and sold it... I'll keep calling in search of a gem.

I only sell small stuff on eBay these days, particularly with all the changes that they've made. I think it's a pretty unfriendly place for sellers now, and probably would not consider selling a guitar there.

That said, I've sold one guitar on eBay and bought one guitar on eBay. The sale was an excellent experience and the buy was good. When it arrived, it was not quite as pristine as described, but still in really good shape.

Congratulations on the successful sale of the guitar! It's shame, what you had to go through, and I hope nobody ever has to experience what you went through.

Having said that, I have not had any problems selling or buying things on Ebay. I sold a guitar (an Axis SS, I think) on Ebay, and the transaction was very smooth. "Caveat emptor" goes for the Seller as well as for the Buyer. For my auctions, I specify payment only via Paypal, United States Postal Service money order, or cashier's check drawn on a United States financial institution so that I can minimize my exposure to such pitfalls as you experienced. This does have the effect of limiting payment options for buyers outside of the United States, but I think the benefits outweigh the shortfalls.

You were wise not to cave in, to refuse shipment until the funds were good, and to not give out information concerning your back account! I'd rather someone steal my credit card information than my bank account information.

Sadly I gave the option to the 'buyer' of accepting a 'buyer and seller agree to cancel transaction' dispute, which would have put us both into the position we had been in before I listed it. He declined it, saying he wanted to go through with the sale (???) after I categorically said I would no longer sell to him.

It seems I can't alter the non-payment dispute and have lost any ability to claim back the fees.

(I chose that route so he wouldn't get a non-payment strike against him. How stupid was that?)

Ebay

My experience with Ebay is not to bad, I have bought serveral instruments recently amongst them a Gibson Les Paul fireburst and two weeks ago an MM Stingray in mint condition dated Oct2002, then again I am looking at Ebay as a buyer, must admit that every time an instrument is on its way ex USA to The Netherlands my hartbeat is up until it arrives, no bad experience sofar.

Good Luck Folks
