Some may giggle but I would have to say Richie Sambora. Great chops yet very soulful, always plays for the song, gets to travel the world in a mammoth rock band that is still going after a very long career. Great sense of humour, down to earth, has plenty of input in the songwriting process, beautiful wife and family...

He one lucky mother! :D
I like Ritchies solos, he's got nice phrasing abilities

Sterling Ball.

Best friends and gets to play with many many top notch musicians. Has a business career doing what he loves, a great family, and gets to mix ALL of those things together.

In a perfect world, I'd want to do EXACTLY the same thing.

I would definatly want to be in Steve Morse's shoes. To me he plays the most beautiful music. He is an amazing composer, and technical player at the same time which is unbeatable for me. He has had an incredibly long career playing with the best musicians such as my FAVOURITE bass player Dave LaRue of course, and is playing with my FAVOURITE band Deep Purple. Plus he is the most down to earth person and has many other cool aspects like flying planes and is not afraid of getting his hands dirty cutting trees at his home and those kinda ranch duties.
The biggest thing for me is his INSANE versatility. Take for example Tumeni Notes, Modoc, and Going to Town....INSANE I TELL YOU!!!

Vai.....Hand's down! I met him as part of the EVO Premium Expereince at the Glasgow Gig last Friday and that in itself has exponentially increased the respect I have for the guy now! I didn't like the new album Real Illusions but now haveing had it explained to me by the man himself its a genuis work of art. It's beyond just playing guitar for the sake of it.......

Ralph Machio comes a close second...... :D

Ty Tabor. He had the tone, the feel, and the vibe. King's X was a big influence for me when I was still a very impressionable young player.

I'm going to go slightly against the tide here and say David Gilmour. He's the only one I know who can get more expressions out of a single note than anyone else with just his fingers. His string bends and vibrato are perhaps the best I've ever heard. Anyone who wants to learn to play with feel while not necessarily being blessed with natural technique should listen to Gilmour's solos IMHO (especially "Shine on you crazy diamond").

I have to second this. My favorite leads are the ones that are 'tasty'....they just ooze with emotion and style. Gilmour's playing has always been that way for me. It has never been technically impressive - but it ALWAYS works. I always look forward to the lead out at the end of 'Another Brick....'

When reading this post I started to think about who I truly groove on and why. It seems I forget about him from time to time, but Jeff Beck just kills me everytime I hear his stuff.

Richie Kotzen.

Versatile in many musical styles and has toured with some of the best players around the world at such a young age and played in some of the best bands out there too. Not to mention insane chops, awesome sense of phrasing and sings really well too.

With all things considered (at least so far as it took me to write this post) I'd have to vote

Jimmy Page

Yeah, Page really has so much going for him: Beyond being a great guitar player with both electric and acoustic, he is a great composer and producer. Adding to that is that he now comes off as a gracious human being in various interviews, etc., and is some-what quietly doing charity work. It is almost unfortunate that he was such a big part of a band like LZ...there are not many guys who have that type of legacy floating over their heads for the better part of their lives. I think the 'Walking into Clarkesdale' album is terrific, and proves he still can play and write.

And everybody can on this forum can at least agree with his choice of string brand ;)

Phil Keaggy if only for what he's done on both the electric and acoustic...I don't know a player who's as expressive on both instruments as he is. Going way back to 1987, I saw him at the Lambs Theater when the Wind and the Wheat just had come out...it totally kicked my a** and I was actually in mental fog for about a day afterwards.

Players who are technically fantastic and have a great capacity to emote in all styles. A killer combo.

Has to be Neil Schon. He's played professionally since he joined Santana at age 16. He was in one of the most successful bands in the 80s with Journey. He played with Hagar in HSAS, as well as other various side projects. I like the fact that he has always been a nice, soulful player, even through the poppy days of Journey, but he can shred with the best of them. He has a lot of money and fame, but could probably still go to the mall, and he would only be bothered by the occaisional true fan, which would be cooler than not being able to go out in public without being mauled by people that recognize you. Plus, he is still on stage, doing what he loves for the people that appreciate it.
