So many names, so little space.
It's difficult for me to pick guitar "heros" because there are way more than five, but I CAN pick the five guitarists that influenced me the most over the years..........I think.
1) Duane Eddy - 1959.......that's when I started playing the guitar (age 7).
2) Chet Atkins (amazing!)
3) George Harrison
4) Eric Clapton
5) Larry Carlton (amazing!)

I really love sooo much music out there and don't try to be critical if any guitarist that seems to be respected even if his playing isn't my cup of tea, he is after all in the position I want to be in.
But..
Petrucci
Buckethead
Gilmour
these 3 force me to keep playing just so one day I might be able to play a DT song or Buckethead song all the way through WELL ,or write something as moving as Dave's work

Influence wise it's all over the board, I try to play different styles but usually fail
Slash, Schon, Page, Clapton, Fruisicante, Knopfler, Blackmore and Dave Grohl haha.

I play/write ALOT of metal so when it comes to my own sound I would say its based mainly off
Metallica
Dream Theater ( I'd like to think)
IN FLAMES, I would mainly play Metallica and attempted DT when I was in the phase of practicing 6-14 hours a day, so when I would just wank I developed a median and when I first heard In Flames I was shocked by how much similarities I found in them.

k that was to long

In no particular order:

1) David Gilmour
2) Steve Morse
3) Steve Vai
4) Ritchie Blackmore
5) Sergej Mavrin (You've most probably never heard of him, but he is great)
6) John Petrucci
7) Adrian Smith (I'm not a big fan of Maiden at all, but I dig his playing)
8) Andres Segovia
9) Django Reinhardt

So that's my Top 5 (actually Top 9, whatever), but this list is subject to change each 5 minutes or so - there are so many great electric and acoustic guitar players out there...

Just 5 that probably haven't been mentioned....I'm a big fan of the short "song within a song" lead solo & these guys did it nicely

Tim Renwick (Sutherland Brothers & later Pink Floyd)
James Honeyman Scott (Pretenders)
George Harrison
Scotty Moore
Glen Tilbrook (Squeeze)

....and I would surely never have picked up a guitar without Hank Marvin (it's a British thing!!)
