I don't disagree with you but I look at a used guitar more from a structural and playability perspective.

Certainly, an abundance of specific kinds of damage, dings, scratches, etc. reflect abuse. Yet if the frets are o.k. The neck isn't dinged up. Neck pocket is tight and without damage. Stings line up perfectly with neck and picukps, etc. I'm willing to consider it regardless of other cosmetic damage (within reason).

The more the "damage" is playing related, the more I disregard it. By comparison, the guitars you tend to see at Music Go Round, in addition to being low end guitars on average, tend to show signs of utter and flagrant abuse. Sometime to the extent of looking like they've been stored in a garage without a case. Clearly, this is not the kind of damage that is acceptable on average. Yet if it's a good guitar at a good price with all the rest of the structural stuff rock solid, it's something I would think about.

I get off on polishing diamonds in the rough though. Sometimes great gear is passed over just because it doesn't look great. That's when I swoop in... cha ching!! :D

If you're smart, patient, know what you're looking for, and don't get buck fever when it's in your sites, you can bag some great deals on used guitars.

Can't say I've been happier with new guitars over used, or vv.

You can also find new guitars which have had too much showroom time to sell at full price, which haven't sold due to something small; like too deep of a cut in the nut. Rather than the store owner returning it for correction, he just lets it hang there. It's still new when you buy it, and therefore still under warranty. I bought just such one as this, for half price. EB made good on the problem, and I'm a happy twanger.
