Chaps,

Just wondered what guitar mags you buy every month? The best IMO is Guitarist. Not because I am from the UK, it is just such good value and the reviews are top class. It is v difficult to get in Dubai, so I end up with Guitar1. Anything to get my fix :D

What do you get and what is the best IYO

Cheers,

Jonny :)

I used to be a real fan of GP but ever since my son started playing, I've seen a lot more mags up close.
I find although GP is good (great), it is WAY overpopulated with advertising-probaly half the magazine is dedicated to inflaming your GAS. ;)

I agree Jonny.....Guitarist is probably the best mag. Very informative with some great lessons. I get it at a local book store and pay out the butt......but, it is worth it to me.

Guitarist is like 15 bucks in the US. Great Mag though.

GP is kinda getting whore-ish. I mean they're mostly doing stories on guys who appear in their ads somewhere. Though certainly a lot of these players are very worth covering.

Eric Johnson on the cover? 5 ads of eric in the Mag, including one alongside the article. same with Yngwie and others recently.

If you wanna get a heads up on who might be in the mag in the near future, just watch the ads.

I dont really care for Guitarist's editorial style. Ever since their publisher changed to Future publishing, it has't been the same. My favourite magazine is 'Guitar' the UK mag, now known as Guitar '& Bass'. Top mag, I buy it every month.

All guitar mags seem to have way too much advertising. The other thing I really hate is how they pretty much overlook country guitarist.

I read GP & bass player (I cant find them in english over here so I get family to send all mine a few times a year) and you're dead on, GP is great (a bit less since they changed their format to look a bit more like guitar world) but man is it EATEN up with ads!

Personally, I love the ads.. that's how I find out about new gear!

However, I like some real content thrown in there, too. I usually get Guitar Player, but I've seen that "Guitarist" mag recently and I think I'll buy that one. (I think this is the one I'm remembering.. it actually had a Music Man ad in the first few pages).

I've got the debut issue of Guitar For The Practicing Musician. Steve Howe on the cover.

Somewhere is the prototype issue but I haven't seen that one in awhile. They only printed about half the pages in that before they issued it out for review.

Siggy,

I remember that issue.. that was probably around 1982 or1983, right?

I used to love GPM 'cause it was the first mag (that I remember seeing) which had tab for songs inside. What became of it? Was it renamed, merged into another mag, or did it just plain die?

Ahh, okay.. Guitar One. I went through a long period where I didn't buy any guitar mags, and that's how I missed it.

What was the date of that first GPM?

I had a subscription to Guitar World, and Guitar for the practicing musician for years... stopped renewing it after it changed to Guitar One, still get GW.

Remember Steve Morse's column "Open Ears"? Probably the best column ever published in any guitar mag. You don't have to be a guitar player, or even a musician for that matter, to get something out of Steve's writings. Very inspirational and instructional notes and observations that is targeted toward musicians, but anyone can apply his ideas to everyday life (it's available in hard cover form now). I finally got to ask Steve at a meet-n-greet if Open Ears would ever make a comeback. His response was something like this:

"Guitar One is a magazine for angry, young guitarists....I'm not an angry, young guitarist."

The man's words from his own mouth.
