hey has anyone noticed that guitar magazines have been using the same 5 guitarists on there cover for like 25 years now? every now and again they put some emocore pop princess or that dooshbag from studioforce on and everyone goes "who's this joker" but for the most part its Hendrix, Zakk Wylde, Van Halen, Kirk Hammet and we cant forget that Dimebag who is on the cover of probably half the guitar mags ever published. Like i love heavy, guitar orientated metal but at some point id like to see something new and read about a young and upcoming player rather then the same 5 guys of which only 3 can enjoy the publicity and increased record sales they'll get out of being on the cover. does anyone else notice this or am i just ranting?

The big advantage of Playboy is that you have a new Playmate every month ...
But you're right : most of the US magazines just show the usual suspects (you forget Slash and Vai in your list).
The magazines from UK like Guitar & Bass are bit more eclectic.

Maybe they could use the same approach & just get each of the guitarists to wear a different outfit for each issue.

Like Slash ?

Hmmm...I only get Guitar Player and can't remember any of those mentioned on the cover in the last year or so. Billy Gibbons was on one. This month it's a guitar and an amp....no people.

We have dropped out of guitar player after being in every issue since 1967. The paper is thinner the editorial is soft and a lot of it is reprints.

THe artists sell magazines. I spent a year and a half in the golf business and its the same. Also you will only get puff pieces with the big 5 because if there was a story to tell and the amgazines told it they would lose the acces to the golden 5.

Very good point

I can't remember the last time I bought a guitar magazine. In the pre internet days, I could not wait for the new issues to come out as it was the only way to access new information on guitar equipment. What with the internet everything I need is at my disposal 24/7.

I'm a bit fed up of the sight of Eric Clapton on a regular basis...

I think it depends on which magazines. In the UK you have Total Guitar, Guitarist, and the best one - Guitar Techniques. Those 3 cater for different styles of guitarists, so you'll find different players on the cover, Total Guitar focuses on the young players ( Dragonforce etc). In the US you have Guitar World ( More Nickleback, Dragonforce, plus Page, Clappo etc) , Guitar Player, and a few other review based mags, both are pretty average in my opinion. Apart from Guitar Techniques no other mags cater for those players who have been playing seriously for more than 3 years, and keep recycling the same songs, lessons etc.

I know what you mean but think I should add that I get Guitar Player and the 3 that I have near me right now have Joe Bonamassa, Brian May and Allan Holdsworth on the covers.

Generally, I think they have pretty good features catering to a fairly wide range of players. I'm 43 and have kind of an 80's and Classic Rock perspective. With that, there's always something there for me in addition to some of the other demographics.

I do get tired of the magazines that do NOTHING but cater to the teenage, garage band, Metal-maniac wanna-be's.

Guitar Player doesn't change my life but I find it interesting enough to keep around.

Original post is spot on.

I also agree with the comment on the current editing and paper quality at Guitar Player.
It also seems recently that the authors/editors of that magazine themselves are publishing articles or filler content that is about them personally & or promoting themselves/bands. (sorry for this rant but its a peeve of mine as once I noticed it once it was like it JUMPED off the pages from that point on ;)

Premier Guitar magazine is where it is at these days. Nice magazine with awesome web site and video interviews backing/supplementing it. Content is available online as well, and I have emails that come periodically directing me to new articles during the month. It's a good mix of print distribution and an online presence IMHO

Check out this months edition for a review of the 25th Axis... I am sure you'll all appreciate the fact that EVH's new offering was also reviewed and the Axis received a more favorable review.

Ive had a subscription to Guitar World and Guitar One (till they merged with GW) since the early 90s. And I still have almost every issue. I too notice LOTS of reprints of old interviews and tabs. It sucks! I want fresh new interviews. I dont care about another nirvana article or hendrix article (among others but those 2 really get on my nerves). It sucks! Plus What The F&$# is with every other page being an AD?!?!?!?! That I really Hate!

Still...
Wow! Dropped out with no plans to go back?

God Bless the internet for some things...but first so many newspapers going out of business, next the magazines, seems like the extinction of an entire way of life for those of us who grew up loving those things. And the people it employed.

ya i had a subscription with TOTAL GUITAR in the uk for about 2years but there was too much garbage in it after a while, not enough guitar related stuff and too much crap talk about bands etc.
The internet and forums such as this are great for information new and old!
