Once again any Londoners know what bus will go from Victoria to Kensington?

I refer the honourable member to the answer given some moments ago..;)

Seriously, sorry no idea about buses but if you are determined to mix with the general populace, try this..

few last bumps as it's only a week away! - Beware I've been told there's a tube outage in London on most lines next weekend, - you may have to walk or get alternative transport -

Circle Line to Olympia is closed. Alternative is to walk the mile from Earls Court (Piccadilly Line). Oh the joys of a Victorian subway system.

Well, Guitar Nation was a bust. £23 ticket, £15 parking and - in my humble opinion - a dreadful show not helped by Olympia 2 being a tired and shabby throwback to the '60's. The place needs a major refurb.

The show was a mish mash of knocked-up booths by third-tier manufacturers, plectrum sellers, and bargain-basement straps and cables etc. The Big Two (Fender and Gibson) were nowhere to be seen.

The place was drowning in PartsCasters. My early-bird ticket promised me a set of Rotosound strings if I stopped by the Rotosound booth. Guess what? No strings ("we've run out = leave your address with us"). No chance to demo a guitar. The cacophony of a couple of dozen (insert your favourite guitarist) wannabees noodling/shredding high-volume riffs put paid to that.

At least punters could play the Balls through headphones. I'd be surprised if S&T's or any exhibitor was able to do any business. It was impossible to engage en exhibitor in any kind of conversation.

Oh well. I've really come to see Albert and the Hogans. What can go wrong? So, I took my place in the exclusive Listen and Learn theatre. Albert was due on at 2.30pm. I had checked the GN web site a few hours earlier. At 2.25pm I noticed the stage was empty. No backline. No drums. Nothing.

Then the announcement came. Albert wouldn't be on until 4:30pm. TWO HOURS AFTER the advertised time!

TWO HOURS? Much as I'd walk over hot coals to get to an Albert gig, I'd organised my day to be back home at 5pm.

I have no idea why Albert's slot was delayed. The organisers didn't bother to give any explanation. I hope he had an audience. I suspect many people who had turned up to see him at 2.30pm also left the building.

By the way. If you're heading to Guitar Nation tomorrow to hear Gordon Giltrap, forget it. He's cancelled.

I won't be returning to a Guitar Nation show any time soon.

At least I've got tickets to Albert's North London gig on November 21.

I was there in the morning. Good thing I couldn't stay for Albert's gig at 2:30! There was no way I could wait until 4:30.

I can't say if this show was a bust or not because it was the first of it's kind I've been to. I will concur though that there was not much stuff to demo (the S&T stand being an exception). And quite a lot of background noise from all the shredders. But I did try all the SBMM that S&T had, plus the Big Al, and I could finally hold most of the guitars to feel the neck profiles. My favourite guitar neck was the AL (apart from the Silo which obviously is like home to me). I noticed I prefer more pronounced radiuses. But I think the little headphone amplifiers they had there, though very functional, didn't do justice to the guitars. Not that they sounded bad, just that it was hard to tell the character of the guitar's inherent tone from what was coming coming out of them.

Now the basses were a completely different story. Even in bypass you could hear they meant serious business. I absolutely fell in love with the SBMM Sterling. What a mean tone machine and so fun and easy to play. I found I got along with four strings better than five (I'm a violinist, should have known that  ), though I sometimes missed those extra low notes. So my dream bass right now would be a Sterling 4HS, though the SBMM is more than a worthy replacement to the cheap 5 string J wannabe I have back home. My guitar choice stays put. Now I just need to bring it here to London :(

Also I got a photo with Mr. Albert Lee himself, and I met lukather101 and the very very nice people at Strings & Things, who really are all passionate about this instruments! (well like we all are).

Nice to meet some of the Knuckleheads when I was helping S & T on their stand.

I'll be posting a separate thread and I'll try to offer some info on what has been stated above.

Spud - tired aching feet after standing for 2 1/2 days! wouldn't change it for the world!!
