So which one are you???
We all know that there are those who can play but are not musicians.
At what stage would you dare call yourself a musician? Do you need to create?
Produce? Write? Tell me!!

With the lessons I got from Tommy on the Morse, I am striving to be a guitar player! LOL.... ;)

Unfortunately

If you were to establish a hypothetical hierarchy of musician - guitarist - guitar player etc.

I would have to catagorize myself as........

a guy who owns a really good guitar

I'm guessing that bass players can jump in here, as well...

...and that's the way I refer to myself. By choice.

I would call myself a guitarist that is studying and learning how to become a musician. I have never had any teacher or any lessons, so it is much harder acomplishing that level. Meaning theory and reading notes and such. I mean you can get a book and such, but if there is no other musician to point the right way, it is hard to know where to start, or how to continue on from the point you are at. I can read notes at this point and know basics of theory, however I cant "compose" for sh*t. That's probably what defines a musician, is that you can compose a whole piece in your head, and transfer it to paper without picking up an instrument. Well, this might be a definition of being an ultimate musician. Ohh yea, and I think the other good alternate definition of a musician in one word would be "perfectionist", which is what I'm striving for ;) . I guess that's why I can NEVER finish a single piece, because I always have the guitar in my hand and start changing things around, and than I say screw it and couple months later I forget the whole grove and notes I was playing  .

I consider myself a musician. I can write songs, play most of the instruments (and program the ones I can't play), sing a little, and I have some theory background.

I don't have the chops of a lot of guitarists, though.

I "write" my band's songs, do the recording, get us gigs, promote, play guitar.

I'm an idiot.

I'm not even a guitarist yet. To me a guitarist is someone who has a command over the instrument. I would call myself someone who plays guitar.

I was once called a "half-@$$ed axe hacker". Has a nice ring to it.

When I do play, which is very very very rarely, i refer to my so-called status as:

I play at playing the guitar.

hah!

I'm a deranged mad scientist who happens to operate the guitar...

saying I'm a musician is an insult to decent musician's everywhere, and saying I'm a guitarist would be offensive to good guitarists....

This is just my opinion, but I consider a musician to be someone that can read/write music, can understand music theory, and play several different kinds of instruments. Somebody like, Paul McCartney.

My Dad is an extremely talented guitar player. He's a Chet style player, but he can't read music, or play anything else, so I wouldn't call him a musician even though he's the best Chet player I've heard.

Then again, I guess that anybody that plays an instrument of any kind semi-professionally could be called a musician.

On the guitar-not yet. But I'm getting there.

Trumpet was my first instrument in 3rd grade, switched to Baritone horn in 4th-12th. So I guess I could sorta call myself a musician.
