Guitar stand left scratches on my Stingray...

I've owned other basses, and have two stands. I'm surprised that one or both of my stands (I've placed my Stingray on both) left marks in the finish. Not sure which one it could be. One is old and one is rather new.

What kind of finish is used for the Musicman bodies and what kind of stand is "safe"? I just can't believe that a guitar stand could damage the finish of a guitar...Now I'm going to have to put it back in the case everytime I'm not using it.

Also is there anything one would use to polish with?

i think ive read that the stands with the surgical rubber things can be bad for finishes (not just MM).

personally i use wall hangers and rockstands (with black foam type stuff) and neither of those seems to hurt the finish on anything i have.

i did have a gig bag chew up a few of my basses tho

as far as polish - id say try some wonder wipes. those things are really, really good

Now I'm going to have to put it back in the case everytime I'm not using it.

Well that's what I do with them when they're not being used.

My stand is a one that looks like a short bass case and folds out, it holds 3 instruments, and has the same plush lining as a case, so no scratch worries.

For buffing out marks and scratches I use Meguires hitech yellow polish you can get at auto parts stores or probably Wallyworld. It also works great at rejuvinating vintage finishes.

I bought a couple of really nice Hercules stands, nice and stable tripod type.Then a roadie bumped one of the guitarists stands and sent his Gretch semi off the stage to the concrete floor , snapping the headstock right off. The next day I gave my guitar stands away and I now carry my bass on and off stage when i play.

I thought it was only nitrocellulose finishes that were affected by rubber on guitar stands?

I use Genesis GS-100 stands that haven't been a problem with any of my guitars so far.

I'm surprised, too. I've owned many Music Man instruments and a lot of different types of stands and haven't experienced any problems at all, even with long-term "stand" time.

Now you said "scratches"? What do you mean? Because scratches aren't indicative of any reaction between the finish and the stand - that would tell me that you have some sort of exposed sharp material on the stand.

It's that ubiquitous black foam stuff that worries most of us, but I've had those, too, without problems. Supposedly, the black foam and the surgical tubing are both bad ideas with nitro finishes, but nothing I own has nitro. (Well, a Tele, but that stays in the case.)

There can be reactions between materials, of course, but the poly finishes on EBMM instruments is very, very tough and durable. I'd be much more suspicious of the stand.

Some of the imported stands (which are about 99% of all the stands you can find now) use unidentified cushioning, and if your finish appears tacky or yellow or slightly melted, it's that cushioning that does it - the crap stuff emits chlorine gas.

The true surgical tubing cover, if you can find those, are supposedly the best and least likely to emit gas. (Surgical tubing is not clear - it's a tan color.)

Ok well to clarify a little bit; not exactly scratches, per say. They're not deep as if it was from metal.

More like "marks" which you can just barely feel and really only see in the light.
