Guitar Stands

This may be a weird question but... I've heard that there are certain guitar stands to watch out for, i.e. they will mess up the finish of a guitar. I'm expecting my EB JPM in a couple of weeks and was looking for a good stand for those times when it won't be in it's case. Anything to watch out for, any recommendations on a decent one? I'd hate to have the finish messed up where it makes contact with the stand.

I use the "Last Stand" triple. I love it. As I typically play both acoustic and electric, this stand works well for me.

As far as I know, that problem with stands that mess up your finish is ONLY applicable to guitars with a Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish, and the Petrucci is not one of those, so no worries...

I use ULTIMATE guitar stands myself - extremely stable, they break down into a fairly portable package, and they're indestructible... Sure, they cost twice as much as most of the stands out there today, but I'd rather spend an extra $15 on a guitar stand than have a $1000 guitar fall over and snap off its headstock...

I have a couple of the stands in question. The ones I have are made by "on stage" and have golden surgical tubing that gets gunky white stuff all over it (and hence on the guitar). Don't know why it does this.

So I've switched over to the ones with thicker black tubing, same manufacturer. 3 legged job. like 10 bucks.

Another good investment is a gig bag so you can just sling that baby over your shoulder when transporting it leaving your hands free to give the finger to drummers, bass players, and especially singers!

i use the black tri-fold stand with the yellow sugical rubber stuff too. i think its what they make tourniqets out of. lol yeah it does have that chalky white crap on it but i haven't noticed it getting on the guitars. as far as a axe loosing its head jimi D, your playing musicmans remember? not les pauls. ;-)

I use a plain cheop-o stand. I replaced the rubber you speak of with automotive fuel line hose. It's cheap, soft, and durable. There are some pics of it at http://web.tampabay.rr.com/bmwmocf/guitars.htm

I use the Hercules stands now and I love them. I think it might be a matter of taste of what you are looking for. I usually go to the Namm show here in Nashville in the summer and check out what the latest products are. I am very impressed with the Hercules stands and they don't cost that much. I have the stand that holds 3 guitars and there is no problem with the finish of my guitars touching the stand.

Thanks for all the info. I guess I'm just being a little over protective of my investment. I had visions of a $15 stand screwing up the finish on my $1500 guitar.
