I'm playing bass (30th Stingray) with Classic Rock band and I'm trying to get the guitarist to purchase a new guitar. Versus tone, price and versitility, what EBMM model should I recommend? He's currently using an old ES335 through a Fender but it will not stay in tune and the clean tone leaves much to be desired...

Well a since the ES335 is a Semihollow body that's a tough call. I'd recommend, Silo Special, AL, 20th or Axis, Axis Sport or ASS. It really comes down to what he likes. I'd have him try those models out. Since he's currently playing a guitar with 2 humbuckers, I'd say check out the Axis and ASS, you can get some really good deals on Axis Sports used and they are great guitars. There's one one the bay right now and then tend to be more reasonable.

Hope this helps, Glenn |B)

Cool handle.

There's so many Balls that will do classic rock. As much as I dig my HSS Silos, if I was doing only classic rock, I'd give a hard look at 20th Silo, though the HSS Silos can cover it well.

Rather than try and duplicate his old ES335, why not keep and open mind to what's available now?

Thanks for the input! Other than being able to do a wide range of clean and distorted sounds, I wouldn't think there'd be any effort to duplicate the old ES. I'd rather he didn't!:D

Tell him to get a Sub... low risk, high reward. Amazing guitar, pretty vintage sounding to me, amazing quality and neck, and PAINFULLY cheap....

I have nothing against the old 335; cut teeth on a 330. But there's so much more out there now. It's hard to convert the vintage/traditional crowd, though. I mean... who in the audience is going to hear a cut and say "Hey, that's not a 335!" :D

i reckon an Axis Super Sport with MM90's will do a 335-ish tone nicely, and more! Or maybe a Silhouette Special with HSS if he wants a versatile single coil sound plus a humbucker tone.

Yeah,

An Axis Super Sport is great for a Classic Rock Tone. Depending on what your guitar parts are though.
If you are playing a number of acoustical parts, I would recommend one that has the piezo option. ( Like the Petrucci Model or a Luke ). In my opinion, you can't beat Petruccis !!! :D

Thanks everyone for your suggestions - much appreciated!! I'll pass along all the input and hopefully I'll be able to report on which model got chosen.

My $0.02 is a Steve Morse Y2D. I've been quite impressed with the wide range of tones from this thing. The neck pup seems a bit warmer than the silo's, nice single coil sound (and the middle pup stays out of the way). The bridge pickup is nice and bright.
