I have an Axis Tribute and find the pickups to be on the bright side. I also play guitars with Tom Anderson pickups and Dimarzio pickups and they sound heavier than the Axis pickups, but with great string definition. I know that the Axis pickups are modeled after Dimarzio pickups, but still find them extremely bright/trebly.

Anyway, if anyone here has any experience with different pickups on their EB Axis, I would like to hear about it. im seriously thinking about getting new pickups for my Axis, but still not sure about what to get. any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. By the way, I play 80's metal and shred type music, and use a Friedman Marsha as my main amp. Thanks!

I won't change them if I was you. The Axis is a bright guitar by nature. The maple is also here to bring some brightness.

what about adjusting your amp settings?

I tried lowering the presence and the treble settings, but I feel that also affects the string definition on the lower strings.

Did you change the pickup height ?
If you want definition, you can try to lower your pickup.

Good luck

I have an Axis SS, I don't know how folks do it without a tone control.........you could use an EQ pedal directly after the guitar before the amp or other pedals, I duse mine to mostly to boost the output of the pups (axis ad axis SS pups can't be raised or lowered).....but, you should be able adjust tone as wel though.

I would trade you for the Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz pickups that were in my Axis supersport when I bought it used. I feel that they sound great, but I'd rather have the stock pickups and the previous owner sold them to someone here.

Thanks, but if I go ahead and change the pickups, I will probably get some bareknuckle pickups. Thinking about a pair of Rebel Yell pickups.

You know whats funny? I have 4 guitars and they all have the same pickups, yet each one has a totally different personality and voice.... hmmmmmm

If you swap out the pickups do not sell them! They are Custom Dimarzio Pickups that can only be purchased in an EBMM guitar. Even if they are not your favorite now, you will go back to them eventually.

I'll buy them if you sell them. There are sooooo many things to change in the chain. try speaker first.

I'm J.G. Wentworth and I got cash now if you wanna get rid of those pickups.

But seriously though, don't sell them! You will regret it! It will hurt resale value of the guitar tremendously. Do what you can to adjust the tone of your axis. Adjust the eq on the amp, add an inline eq, change the speakers, try a new amp. Anything really. Even if you change the pickups...do not get rid of the originals!

I have two AXis guitars and recently installed a Dimarzio Super Distortion/PAF Pro combo in my second one. I really like this combination. I did have to route out where the legs sit in the cavity though because the SS was taller than the stock bridge pup

Now I have two awesome feeling guitars that sound different :)

I'm considering selling my set to fund for a wireless unit

I'm also considering swapping out the stock pups on my Axis Tribute. I think I want something with a little more on the low end. I've got a SD/36th PAF combo that I had in another guitar that I love, but unfortunately they are the black/red zebra (Axis is purple so it wouldn't look very good lol). I'm considering some Suhr Aldrich pups, but I haven't decided for sure yet.

I actually had a MCP Afwayu that I put in that was a direct drop in. With that SS you will have to do some modifying and not sure you want to do that

I wish I wouldve held on to the Afwayu. It was too hot at first but I sent it back and he re-wound it and really tamed it down. I still wish I wouldve kept it. Im wierd like that though. I guess I get bored or am just always looking for something 'better'

Heh, that describes me in a nutshell. Until I played my SM-Y2D, I was going through a couple guitars a month from different companies, and I still had to mod the Y2D to find the sound I was looking for!
We have issues, lol
