Good day to you all!

Have I got a defective Pre-amp/Pickup? :(

Model: 2016 Single H 3 eq Musicman Stingray black/rosewood. :)

The bass is very boomy and has low output when compared to another stingray, and its not the pickup height or battery.

All wiring is correct as it the connection to the battery.

I have noticed that the Single humber magnets are much weaker on all rear coils?

Here are some sound Samples through a Focus Rite 2i4 , no amps or other DI's in the chain, clean signal. :D

EQ FLAT = Vocaroo | Voice message

EQ FLAT + BASS @ 10 = Vocaroo | Voice message

EQ FLAT + TREBLE @ 10 = Vocaroo | Voice message

EQ FLAT + BASS/TREBLE @ 10 = Vocaroo | Voice message

How is this comparing you your own stingrays?

Thanks!!

Do the tap test with a screw driver on the pickup poles. I had a dead bridge humbucker on my my 5hh and the rear coils were almost completely silent. I caught it right away because it sounded like a jazz bass, not a stingray. I would contact customer service they'll help you out.

Just listened to your recordings and it doesn't really sound that off. Mine sounded completely different than what a stingray should sound like when the pickup was bad.

Playing only the neck side of the bridge humber
will not sound huuuugely off. Vice-versa OTOH
is a monster difference. Comparing your "bridge
single coil" [neck side live] to a dual PU version
that was playing only its neck PU is pointless. It
is just that different. Do the tap-on-poles tests,
just so you can have that much more info when
you contact Customer Service, which you really
hafta do anyway.

Not quite sure what your saying but when I had mine switched in the middle position with both humbuckers it still didn't sound right at all. In the solo bridge pu position it sounded like a single coil pickup (very similar to a jazz bass). There's an obvious difference with one coil of the bridge pu being dead. Since he only has a single H stingray, if its in parallel it would sound obvious if one of the coils was dead. As far as I can tell with the recordings it still sounds exactly like a stingray, maybe something with the preamp is funky unless the tap test reveals a bad coil.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! :)

I found out what the issue was, the pickup!

its just somehow came with less magnet pull on the pole pieces that a standard stingray should have.

I put a screw driver on it to see the force of the magnetic pull and its not much compared to other stingrays which really grab on.

I can get the stock stingray tone...but the pickup is so high its hitting the pole pieces.
When set to the ideal height Ernie Ball recommends its not getting any real tone.

so i gotta magnetise the pole pieces with 2 neodymium magnets and a vice grip.

As its a humbucker, north polarity on one set of coils and south polarity on the other row of coils.

Fingers crossed!

All the best!

Did you buy the bass new? Maybe this is something covered by warranty? Might be good to contact customer service to see if you can swap the pickup for a better one rather than going through all that trouble.
