...asked the buyer, "If you ever want to sell this bass, please give me first shot, as I might be in a position to buy it back from you.";)

Has this ever happened to anyone here before? Well it has happened to me at least 3 times in the past few years, and not ONCE did the seller ever give me a chance to buy the bass back. :(

It just happened to me last WEEK, and the seller just got this bass at the very end of July!

Please help me understand why this has happened to me....

it happens to all of us.. some people see an opportunity to get some cash and they grab it.

some of us are stupid enough to not take that chance, while others call it decency ;)

I don't know...I'm no shrink..but maybe they think, IF they're trying to sell it and Make a little more than they paid..the person they got if from would say "Hey...You want me to pay MORE for what I sold it to YOU for". Again, no one would mistake me for Dr. Phil..just a guess.

Yes, but I didnt ask for it back. Once I havent owned it and its been used by someone else, Id be worried it wasnt the bass I once loved. Therefore, I just end up regretting it and getting annoyed haha.

I just sold my Stingray due to medical needs. :(

I fully realized that the buyer has the right to do as they please since they now own it. I never put them in a position such as you describe. If things turn around and I can buy it back before it is resold then Awesome for me! but if not then that is the way of life and I just have to go with it. More opportunities will come in the future.

I am sorry that things did not work out for you but you did sell it for a reason and you were lucky enough to find someone to buy it when you needed to sell it. So, I guess you have had a positive in this whole thing.

My advise would be that if it has been the same buyer, don't sell anymore to them if they don't stick to their word or roll with the punch.

Best of luck in future endeavors.

I have never asked that of a buyer, but if I did, I don't think it would be that hard for them to just ask. Unless they are asking more than they paid for it.

Once you sell a bass, you no longer have any say what happens to it, how much it's sold for in the future, or when it'll be presented to you as an opportunity if/when you can re-buy it.

Them's the breaks. To get all  about someone else deciding they want to sell a bass they own only three weeks after they bought it is a pointless exercise. Personally, I find this thread to be poor form since the bass in question was sold to a fellow forum member.

I've asked this of others before and then pestered them every few months to buy it back... :). But I do believe in reciprocating with others. It's not hard to just ask the person you bought it from first. Either way you sell it, and if anything you already have a relationship with that person and can trust them in the transaction.

They don't have to sell it but if they do I can understand someone wanting a chance.

The issue here is that the OP can't re-acquire the bass he just sold three weeks ago. The person who bought it decided they'd rather flip it now than hold onto a bass that they aren't in love with and the OP can't swing it right now which is something we can all relate to.

While I understand that it sucks for the OP because the person who is buying it now might not offer the same assurance, the current owner of the bass doesn't owe anyone anything so there is nothing to be mad about. Bottom line--Don't sell something you aren't willing to give up forever because once it ain't yours, it ain't yours.

I've had two people make good on this request from me in the last two months. Generally a really good group of people around these parts. I certainly can understand you being upset if someone sold it out from under you but if they looking for a trade only then it's a little different situation.

unless it is mutually agreed too by both parties that your sale is contingent on the fact if they sell the bass you have the right to buy it back other wise you have absolutely no say as to what some one does with their bass. i am sorry if you feel like you have been slighted but it doesnt sound like you really have any reason to.

Sure.

Personally, I find it poor form to sell on without asking the original owner first. It's not about rules or legal rights. It's about honour and friends and family.

Just recently I've asked a forumite, who was the original owner (and ordered the bass) of one of my current possessions and expressed some sellers remorse, whether he was interested in getting this bass back. Even though I've not even bought it from him but from someone else. I considered his response before putting it on the market.

I can confirm this! :D ...and it is useful. Because I'll always remember you first when thinking about parting.

What Oliver said.
Both as seller and buyer I have made these kinds of deals with friends at the Swedish bass forum, works great. One exception I always include in the agreement is that if the current owner "needs" to trade the bass in question for something else, then all is fair. Hey, it's the current owners bass after all.

The scenario here is that the person that bought the bass didn't even give me a shot at buying it back.

I "CAN" swing it right now, though it would be tough, but I wasn't even given a CHANCE to buy it.

Maybe you guys who are saying that he had a chance to FLIP this bass at a profit, are right on the MONEY... (PUN INTENDED)

He doesnt owe you a chance at buying it back unless you both agreed that he would when you made the original sale to him. While it would be cool if he did it is his bass to do with what ever he wants once he buys it.

You can look at it a couple of ways. Bad luck or an opportunity to find a better bass than the old one you want back. With the economy being what it is, give the fellow a break for not offering it back. Good fortune will come your way in the form of the bass you really want.

Once you sell it, be done with it. Understand that it is no longer yours and that whatever happens to it in the future should not negatively affect you in any real way. I have learned this the hard way, too.

Bought a Brad Houser 5er Rumblefish one night on eBay for 700 bucks. This was years ago, no one thought they were all that special, but it was weird enough for me to try it out. Kept it, good bass, played it for a year or so and meanwhile a "friend" bugged the crap out of me to sell it to him. Eventually, being a gear whore (and I was BAD), I sold it to him for what I paid and asked for first right of refusal. A few months go by and maybe he's strapped for money or whatever, but he emails me and offers it back to me. Really nice of him, wasn't it? Only now the price has gone up to a thousand bucks. ORLLY? Yes, because now the value has increased and -

The lesson here is that I almost wish he'd just sold the effin' thing without me ever knowing about it (and I probably never would have). Because now I still, years later, still think it was an ass-hat thing to do. Which it was.

So - be careful what you wish for, and there are lots of other basses out there to buy and love.

It's about honour and friends and family.

Think that was what the OP was on about.... But....................

Missed out on a few with that thought in mind myself, (meaning the very 1st Stingray that i missed out on buying some 12yrs plus ago an still think about it today), as far as i no its still kicking around locally today. just this time round i might, just might be in the right place at the right time with the right amount of £$ an finally bag it !
If i ever manage to track it down an eventually manage to call it mine then you will all hear about it (it great length :p) but until then .......
Who ever snatched it from under me got the deal of a lifetime (as far as I'm concerned), the same kind of a deal that you (or I) got when you last baged a bass an were more than happy with what you got,
But with every one of them kind of deals comes somebody who just missed out cause they were after it to.
But anyways :) theres another just around the corner with your name on it just waiting on you picking it up,
peace...
