He doesnt owe you a chance at buying it back unless you both agreed that he would when you made the original sale to him. While it would be cool if he did it is his bass to do with what ever he wants once he buys it.

I just started this thread to hear other experiences. I really am enjoying the answers, so keep 'em coming.

I honestly didn't mean to sound like sour grapes, but instead wanted to see if others have had the same experience.

Just for the record, I have in an email that we had a deal that if he ever wanted to sell the bass, he would give me FIRST shot.

As far as I can tell he traded it for some other brand...

Deals, more deals.

mmbassplayer just contacted me to buy back his Big Al that I picked up from him (and love by the way). Since I ordered a roasted maple of the same bass, I'm all for holding it for him until he can do the deal and get her back. I like happy endings.

In another case -- I instantly got remorse selling a custom Bongo to gearhunter and he readily agreed to give me first right of refusal is he ever parts with it.

I really do like this place.

That Big Al has serious Mojo... and not the bad cosmetic kind... the uber-cool tone goodness kind..... very very good piece of wood! That Roasted Al is going to be INCREDIBLE though. African Mahogany body goodness slathered in Black Sugar and Roasted with just the right amount of highly figured Maple neck syrupy sweet goodness... Heck YA!

Depending on the circumstances I would be uncomfortable with someone I bought a piece of gear from contact me with an interest in buying it back. That being said I'm someone that doesn't move alot of gear, I have five basses, three that I'm very attached (two Stingrays) to and would tell anyone who enquired to buy to go fly a kite, including the guy who sold me one of them last year, sorry, one that's a closet queen that's with me because it's collectable, was my backup until last year, though if someone enquired about I might sell and my Dad's old 50s hollowbody bass that was my enitre inheritance (and a bunch of plaid shirts), would never sell it, rarely play it. I've been playing for 17 (coming up on a decade with my first Stingray) years and apart from these basses I've sold three basses, a 90s Jbass, a 79 pbass and my first bass, a Kent i bought in three pieces and somehow put back together (if you can imagine a short scale bass with a narrow neck with an old pbass bridge on it because I was needing a bridge and got this on for $5 because it had a stripped screw... luither I was not) I'm not ever going to ask for any of those back....

So I guess it should be taken into account what kind of guy you sell your gear to if you ever want to buy it back.

Not only this but also take into account what kind of guy sells his/her gear.
If I wanted to buy say a 20th 5 HH off of sb who urgently needed some cash to help him/her out a bit but was treated in a most unreasonable way, I would not (meaning never ever) sell it back to him/her, if I had bought that bass despite having been treated that way.

As bovine said: be done with it.

I tend to treat most sale/trade deals like a one-night stand, with no expectation or promises of seeing the other person ever again.

I have, however, managed to form a few relationships in some of these dealings, and would always welcome the request for a buy/trade-back option from these people before moving the item on to someone else.

Far as I can remember I've never asked for it, since I always try to sell the stuff I like the least. Nevertheless I recently got my beloved DG Bongo 5 back, which was kind of cool:)

I think that a lot of us here would honor that kind of agreement if asked.

Once I decide to let something go, I let...it...go. I've traded and sold off some rare and nice instruments, but it's the next owners bass and theirs to do whatever they want.

With that said, common models are easy to replace. The next nice one will get the job done, or if it's common enough, another one just like it will come along.

Once I have gotten rid of something, I have never really went back after it. The only exception was one bass that I traded in to pay off a layaway at Guitar Center because the layaway was about to end. I was going to buy the bass back 2 weeks later but it never went on the floor again?

On here, I traded an acoustic guitar for my very first Music Man bass, my 2005 Sterling 4H. I have been very happy with the trade but after I did the trade, my wife told me that she was bummed that I did it because the acoustic guitar had sentimental value to her due to me buying it right after her and I married. I had no idea she felt that way but told her it went to a good home. If the person that I traded it too on here ever does sell it and I am in a position to buy it back, then I may consider doing that but I know he is not obligated in any way to do so and if it went to another home, that is his choice too and I would not feel bad if he did that either.
