why do some stingrays have the nobby bit between the D and A strings, and some have the nobby bit between the G and D strings?

They're called String Trees.
Pre-EB Basses had it on the D and G strings.
EB put it on the A and D because those 2 strings have the longest run to the tuners.

yeah its bad when you get your nobby bit in the wrong place. It happened to me once.
