Help a newbie

hi folks...
right, i need some help here...

i have a bunch of guitars at the mo (various, Fenders, Gibbo's, ESP's, Jackson, Washburn's, etc)
now a good friend of mine, a reprobate who's well known round these parts (a certain Smellybum 5150) has been trying to tempt me to the dark side, the problem i have is this... of all the Balls i've played, i haven't played a bad one, or rather they've all been consistently good, so i'm at a point where aesthetics are playing a major part in my search for my 1st EB, so...
i'm thinking maybe some pointers, opinions, and peoples experiences with different models, what was the transition like going from one guitar to another, etc, any other pro's and con's associated with particular models...

i'm in an old school Hard rock/Metal band (feel free to check us out at Vantage Point or http://www.myspace.com/vantagepointrocks), so i'm mainly looking at humbucker laiden instruments, and admittedly i've literally used nothing but Floyd Rose trems for the last 16 years

Welcome to the Forum Lum.

I would appear that a silo or an Axis would fit in with your requirements.

I changed from a 3 humbucker Les Paul Custom to a 3 single Coil Albert Lee and I am soooo glad that I made the swap over.

It depends on what your used to.do you do much shredding or fast riffs etc with your band.i find the JP model is very versatile.not sure if smellybum has a JP for you to try but i reckon it would be right up your alley.

go BFR if you can afford it!

Welcome to the forums Lum!!! I think a JP would suit you, or a silo, or a Luke, or an Axis. Well, just go one of each, it's hard to pick just one. "Betcha can't Buy Just One" would be a good tag line.

Play all that you can find. Pay attention to what you like and what you don't like about each. I've only really only paid attention recently. I had one guitar from 1969 till February of this year. Funny things have come up that I like/don't like. I don't like knobs close to where I'm picking......I find that I hit it and turn the volume down (my jackson has this problem). I don't like a center pickup (my jackson and Godin have this problem). Once you figure this out, listen to each....a lot.... with different amps...or with the amp you own. If you still like more than one, then heck....decide on the one you like the looks of better. My choices have all been scattered, but it's a learning process and I plan to sell off some of these....or keep them for my kids

JP sounds pretty good for your style.

Side note... I went and listened to a few of your songs. Sounds more so progressive metal then heavy metal... If you know of the band Stratovarius, saddly they broke up this year, you guys sound a lot like them.

About time n' all - for those of you who don't know Lum and I have been friends since we were 5 I'm the David St. Hubins to his Nigel Tuffnel, we played in a bunch of bands when we were kids, I moved 200 miles away to seek my fortune and Lum stayed behind (we really should make this into a movie one day !?) Lum was the best man at my wedding,

Anyway Lum has always been on the heavier side, I'm an old hillbilly of a player....I don't know if an axis is for him but I reckon a morse Y2D in purple sunset (as it matches most of his wardrobe.

He's my +1 for the Uk bash - I'm hoping there's a morse there if so we could be coming home with matching ones!!!!

It seems that each model has a distinct personality & feel. My suggestion would be to try to play as many as you can and go for the one that speaks to you.

FWIW, I play Axis Super Sports. It's the only model I've played, but from the first time I picked one up, it was like, yes, that is the guitar for me. It just felt "right".

Well...if you are wanting a Floyd....I would go with either the Y2D or the Axis. Both are awesome.

The above reminds me a lot of me so I may be able to help you!

I currently own an Axis, a Y2D, a Silo Special (SSS) and 5x Petruccis - guess which I like the best?

All have pros and cons but the JP for me is the best all rounder.

I won't go back to a Floyd now having used the JP trem for the past few years. Works brilliantly without all the clamps and allen keys and snipping etc that goes with a Floyd.

I prefer the sound of the JP to my Axis and Y2D (pickups seem tighter and better defined to my battered ears). In-between sound with 2 split coils is great for clean sounds (should you ever need one!)

Definitely more comfortable than the Axis or Y2D with the waist-cut (essential for me) and brilliant forearm contour.

Neck is superb - quite thin but v.comfortable and 24 frets which I personally find essential.

I do think the Axis and the Y2D are more attractive than the (old) JPs with lovely translucent tops. Haven't tried the BFR yet myself, but as long as the finished neck is as nice to play as the unfinished, this may be the ultimate guitar with all the advantages of the JP combined with a really attractive top etc.

If you do decide to go down the Y2D route let me know, as I may sell mine.

hey Lum. like you, i also used only floyd trem., but it took me no time at all to LOVE the trem. on my JP6. go with the MMJP6!!!

Hey Lum - didn't know you were going to be at the bash - you should be able to try out everything - take notes so that you can remember all the nuances of the EB guitar, when you sober up!!

I say go for the JP. It is perfection in every aspect IMO! Looks, playability, sound, feel, weight, balance, Tone, shape, Tone, neck profile, Tone, neck radius, TONE, fret width, neck scale, and oh yeah, did I say TONE?!
