So looks like I'll be joining a 11-piece funk/R&B band. Casino gigs lined up, pretty cool. After years of gigging traditional blues with no pedals, I need some advice.

In going through the playlist, I hear the usual phaser/Univibe/envelope filter stuff from the '70s, especially with the chicka-chicka rhythms. My modulation pedal inventory consists of a single old one-knob MXR phaser.

Question: is there one pedal out there that can capture the waka-chicka vibe?

Enlighten me Knucklehead mind hive!

I think a good compressor, like an Orange Squeeze or MXR Custom Comp will give you some nice squish and it's great for funk.

A lot of funk playing friends love the Q-Tron and other filter effects too. The old Boss Super Phaser PH2 has some good funk tones.

I'd say good wah, good vintage phaser and a compressor if you can swing it.

If you've got an old Phase 90- that's solid. (At noon it does a good univibe, and you can rotate the knob with your foot). The EB wah is excellent. For funk, I use an orange-squeezer type compressor ... really nice and squishy.

Skip's has a great selection of pedals right now...

Yes, I just picked up one there :)

I hadn't thought of a compressor, thanks guys. The setlist is far more rhythm-oriented than wah-based leads, so that is a good idea. Something Q-Tron-ish as well.

Depends what your budget is! Check out the Subdecay Prometheus and the WMD Fatman for some cool (but expensive) options.

Also, get a wah! ;)
