Hi guys!!
I'm writing to ask for some help,
a friend of mine chipped the top coating of my BFR JP 7 and now i'm looking for a solution to fix it....
i asked to a couple of guys that build guitars and they said that they can re-make the entire transparent top coating but there's the risk to damage the blue of the top, and anyway it could cost almost 300$... i asked if there's some way to operate "locally" on the chip and they said that they're afraid to ruin the blue....one said "usually there's a small layer of transparent coat over a colored coat that's put on another layer of transparent"

now i wanted to know (if possible) how the coating is made on the BFR JP7, i mean, is the wood stained with the aniline color and then coated with transparent? or there are just various layers of transparent and colored coating as the guy said?

what should i do? do you have any suggestions? any solutions?

thank you so much!!!!!

Hello Roberta. I'm sorry to hear the bad news. You can't touch up these finishes. I'm afraid that you'll have to learn to live with the chip, or else have the entire finish resprayed. I wish I had better advice. Good luck.

Anyone that offered to "fix" that is... something -.-. You can't drop fill catalyzed finishes without a "witness line" no matter how good of a job it is. Since its "crushed" and not flaked off, I would leave well enough alone honestly. Any fix may look "ok", but it will stick out like a sore thumb for you. Sorry this happened though :-/

Hi Roberta,

Yeah, that $300 seems more like a strip and refinish price. If I may suggest something less extreme that won't result in jail time or adding to Lou's impressive collection?

Consider the dent as a war wound, relic, natural aging. What ever you want to call it. With the first dent (assuming this is the first dent/scratch) out of the way, you are truly free to let loose on the guitar. Not necessarily Jimi-Hendrix-pyromania or Pete -Townsend-trashing free, but hopefully you get the picture.

i am so SO attached to that guitar, i've had it for 4 years and not even a single scratch....and then this friend of mine damaged it and i'm so angry i cant even explain! so there's no way to fix this? or to make this less visible?

Nope, gotta live with it, my ax40d i got used has a big ding in the back( luckily the back) right into the wood! But ive learned to live with it since its a player not a collector, and its an import, even though its heavily modded to be like the usa.

Oh Roberta! Say it isn't so! :(

I know how much this hurts for ya. I would say your best bet would be big bends encore scratch remover. Granted, I know this is far more than just a scratch but, its the best thing I've ever used for high gloss finishes.

Heres a demonstration of the product:

If you would indulge me once again.

I owned a Fen*** '57 Reissue Strat in Surf Green. Beautiful guitar. I really, really, really liked that guitar, but found myself not truly playing it like a guitar should be played. So I sold it, not because I didn't like it, but I was stressing out over when it would get its first ding or dent. It's like waiting for the first chip in a new windshield.

I only buy used guitars now and they age faster than I do.
