This riff is kicking my a$$!! I have been practicing and practicing it until my fingers are about to fall off and I still can't play it, at speed. Okay, I know, I'm old and I'm a hack.........but one of the guys playing it is four years older than me (than I?), the other guy (Luke) is five years younger.
The song is "Don't Give It Up" by Larry Carlton. On the live DVD I have of Luke and Larry, they are both playing this friggen riff as if it was easy - while joking around with each other and doing the day's Sudoku and crossword puzzle. Just goes to show how wonderfully uncoordinated I am. Grrrrrrr..................lol
If any of you guys can play this dad gum thing PLEASE give me a clue as to how to do it. I think for the most part, the upward two-string sweep picking part of the pattern is the biggest problem for me.

Thanks
The Vastly Uncoordinated

PS: Larry, please get rid of them damn cigarettes!!!

This is a great DVD!!!! This video is available on the "Larry Carlton Steve Lukather Band" DVD. Please encourage great artists as these by purchasing it.

In the next 24 hours I'll post a slo-mo (because that's all I can muster) video of myself trying to play the impossible riff. I'll entitle it "The Impossible Riff". haha
It's just roots thirds and fifths.

I can do it, its not THAT hard, It must be something simple thats not working for you, maybe you could post a video of you playing it?
I made this this morning. Only one cup of coffee to help achieve my blazing speed.
This is as fast as I can play the riff - which is much slower than it needs to be. First I play it very slowly for those who may not know the notes. Then I kick in the afterburners and really scream through it, sloppiness included. :D
Apologies for my $2 web cam.

I do not pick every note, if that's what "economy picking" is. I am fair at alternate picking.

I have been practicing it on and off all day today, trying different ways to pick. I find that choking-up on the pick so only a very small portion of it actually picks the strings, and with the aid of a second cup of coffee I have picked up some speed. It's encouraging.
