So going into all of this, I thought there was one Axis and that there was nothing but a small price difference for a model with a trem.

I noticed not long ago that some had volume and tone and some had only volume. That started my confusion.

So yesterday, I sold off one guitar, which puts me one more sale away from seriously looking for an Axis for myself.

My understanding as of now:

Axis: basically comes one way. With a dive-only floyd (without d-tuna) and one volume control and with string locks.
Basswood body with maple top and maple neck.
DeMarzio HH. (no piezo) and 3 way pickup switch.

Axis Super Sport: Several ways:
all have volume and tone.
Some are hard tail, some come with a trem....but I don't know which.
Axis SS comes with basswood/maple/maple and the HH
Axis MM90 comes with an ash body with single coils (how many???)
There could be a piezo option on some.

Looking at all this, the Axis looks like what I'm after, but I'll be buying used so will likely have far less choice.

Is my understanding correct so far?
What else do I need to know?
Are there huge price differences between options?
Am I being too much of an engineer and I should just go buy one? :D

thanks for the help.....jack

Okay here's how it works:

Axis: You got it

Axis Super Sport: You can get either Trem, or Hardtail, no floyd rose

You can get it in Humbucker or MM90's

maple or rosewood board (like the Axis)

Tone and Volume, as well as 5 way switch for Humbucker, 3 way for MM90

When you order it, you get to decide which options you want- like a car only better. Do you want trem or not? Humbuckers or not? Natural or matching headstock? Maple or Rosewood? Pacific Blue Burst, or Trans Blue?

Usually, the trems are more expensive, matching headstock is an upgrade so it is also more expensive. Piezo is also available on the ASS, so you can get that too. More options, bigger price. Each option comes with a price increase

And yes, you should buy one. To be precise, you should buy mine! I'm locallllll! You know you want to ;)

Hmmm, you certainly have my attention.

I just got a little surprise at bedtime. My 7 year old was crying, knowing that I put the Jackson up for sale. It seems that he's very attached to it (was there when I bought it) and loves the Floyd Rose (hasn't tried it since I changed it from 3 springs to 5, I guess). So the wife says "don't sell the Jackson". Not something I expected to hear from her.....it's usually "when are you going to stop buying guitars".

So the OLP goes up for sale instead, since it's the work guitar and nobody's got any sentimental attachment to it......

That should get my guitar total to an acceptable level. I also clued the wife in on my plan to buy an Axis, which is why the Jackson was going. I've tended to buy first and apologise for the purchase later.

Want an OLP Benji Madden replica in trade?

:D

You got it Jack.

Basically, the ASS offers players more options, hardtails, piezos, maple or rosewood, and more tone control and pickup selection, than the Axis. However, the axis is more of a throwback to the EVH model, I believe. It sort of keeps the EVH fans happy, if you will. What makes the Axis is one big selling point, I believe: Floyd Rose. Not the biggest fan, however, when the Music Man Standard bridge works just as well.
