!!!!help me out i just got booked for a

Jazz gig

in 4 days i play my first jazz gig.....i have never played jazz before ...ever,i dont even listen to it

its not the music i dont like its just i find "real Jazzers" hard to deal with sometimes,but these days a gig is a gig !!

they are dropping a cd off to me (4 days should be loads to learn a set )but what are "jazz classics" if you can help at all please chip in

i am thinking of using my bongo instead of the SR5 just for the tone...i dont know ....help !! mind you the tone is prob the last thing i should be worried about

the real jazzers i have met all have the same attitude that everything other music is below par,didnt mean to upset you

See if you can find yourself a "FAKE BOOK+cdrom"

containing all the standards, for you to quickly appreciate the chord changes used in things like.. "All the things you are" Someday my Prince will come" etc etc....

Everyone can play jazz if they put their mind to it but, it's no easy gig for a bass player that hasn't played any before ore heard any as you say, you need to know how to do walking basslines, Ed Friedland has an excellent book out too called Buliding Walking Basslines

i have walking bass line and i got about half way into it and its fantastic,i will dig it up again.i will pop into town today and see if i can pick the other one up too.

Both books will help and start listening to some jazz so you can get the feel. Do not tell anyone at the gig that you haven't played jazz before or they might look down on you. They will like your tone because you are playing the best bass for any type of music!

You didn't upset me one bit. And Marcus really doesn't play jazz.

its 2nite !! got the set and its more blues jazz than standard stuff,its very cool set i really wish i had more time with it.
on another note i have been playing weddings on an off for about 15 and played last night to the coolest bride i have ever meet,she was a gem.anyway back to the studying !

wow gig over and it was great,as i said i was not amazing or going to blow anybody away but what i played i did well.the Ed Friedland walking bass line was a great help

it opened me up to a bit more jazz and i think its time i started to listen to a bit more.

bongo for most of the songs but i finished the night off with my SR5.
the guys really liked the tone from my markbass rig and both basses,a bloke asked to see the bongo after the show,like me for a long time he had only ever seen them in a mag or on the net.he plays a 70's fender jazz and loved the weight and the tones from the bongo.i played and sang (not too great at the singing bit) aint no sunshine and did a bass solo in it with the bongo and it sounded great playing lead.anyway good fun,all played with a pinch of salt !!
