Hi everyone I need some help from you.
I bought on ebay a 79 sabre, the bass that i always want , today is arrived to me after many many miles from usa.
Everithing ok but when i plugged it here it is a BIG problem.
The bass is MUTE!
i mean that on a 100 W ampli to hear something i have to put all the knobs up, my ray 5'll brake a window if played with this setting on the amp!!! What kind of problem do you think it have? The battery is new ( i found a 1992 duracel in it ).
I've setted the distance of pickups from strings.
All the switches do their job but the bass and trebble knobs if turned don't produce any considerable tone change.
All this things bring me to suppose that there is a pre-amp problem.
Someone can tell me any suggestion?
Please tell me that i can find a solution to the problem!
Thanx everybody

Sounds to me like power isn't getting to the preamp. Considering it seems to have sat for a while unused, I'd be first trying to clean the contacts in the jack socket and checking for faulty (perished) wiring to the battery. If you can get to the preamp and are savvy with a mutimeter, you could at least check to see if power is making it to the electronics.

Don't worry. If it were mine and Niftydog's suggestions didn't work I'd just replace all of the components on the circuit board. Cheap. Maybe a bad IC chip?

Digikey.com has them. Do a search for LM4250CN. Allied Electronics also has them. You may try getting free samples from National Semiconductor. I've had good luck getting free samples from other manufacturers.

While you're all worrying about semiconductors etc [and for all I know you're correct] don't forget to check for a partial leak to ground. Kinda unglamorous, I know, but the bane of everything old and electrical. A really filthy pot can be such a grounding path.

Running properly, your '79 Sabre should scare the kidneys outa your Ray-5.
