I actually LOVE the tone of the sterling turned up full ball.... with a fresh set of strings and the right eq'ing on my amp...that baby growls - it really is a beautiful natural overdrive...... which works as well for my industrial/dance metal band as it does for my blues band..... the great thing is if I went less dirty and more pretty - I know that I can control that from the bass... any loss of volume gets accounted for by the engineer....

As far as pickup height, the factory specs are only a starting point. If you play agressively (really digging in) like I do, you may have to lower them somewhat. My pickups on my Bongo 4 HH are way down and I get great compliments on the sound/tone.
On my Sterling, my pickup is at factory height and I play with my bass control wide open, my treble boosted some and the mid control flat. I play through a GK 800RB and I don't push in the active button, it just sounds punchier that way. Now based on what's been said in this thread it would seem that I'm pushing the envelope and should be clipping or distorting but I'm not, in fact, it sounds great. I'm thinking your pickup has to be way too high.
