Help using a pick on a SR5HH

First of all, I'm a fingerstyle player but I am considering using a pick much more often. (long story, but I need to grow my nails on my right hand for classical guitar)

I tried using a thick pick on my SR5HH (Ceramic pickups) in switch position 3 and boosted the mids and bass slightly on the bass last night at band practice. The tone was too boomy and hard to control so I went back to position 4 fingerstyle and everything was peachy again.

My technique with a pick is pretty good, so I'm thinking it was how I eq'd the bass. Switch position 3 is a bit scooped in the mids so I'm suspicious of this.

I've heard that position 5 works well with picks and will give that a shot. In my bedroom position 5 showed promise.

So... I'm soliciting suggestions from those more experienced than I... Which settings work well using a pick on an SR5HH to get close to a fingerstyle tone?

Any of the positions should work, its just a matter of what sounds good. If you think your sound is too boomy, roll the bass off a bit and pick towards the bridge.

Man, crank those tone controls wide open, put it on the bridge humbucker, grab your pick and unleash the growl from within that bass!

with all pots straight up..........i go with fingers...........when it comes to pic time.......i lose a bit of the bass,toss in a li'l mid.......good to go.

The more I practice with position 5, the more promise I see with it and a pick. I frankly rarely use this position with fingerstyle as it has a general lack of punch. I think this works well when using a thick pick and a wee bit of bass and mid boost.

When I'm forced into a corner and must use a pick, I leave the bass flat, boost the mids a little, and add a leeeetle bit of treble. (no haircuts)

I also tend to boost the low mids on my amp a little if I know i'm gonna have to bring out one of those blasted little pieces of plastic.

The bridge 'bucker is what I normally use for the dreaded little shells, with its generous growl and tonal definition, though the second setting away from that works too, as well as all 4 coils with a little bass rolled off, but that's usually for tool covers. I find it emulates Chancellor's sound very well.
