My manager's son has taken up playing the guitar. He is in need of an inexpensive amp and I was wondering if anyone could help me lead him to the best bang for his buck. The budget will probably be in the $250 range. He's 11 years old and does play with some friends sometimes but mostly by himself at home. Suggestions?

Crate GFX (or any with the FlexWave 5 preamp) ... for the money, a really good sounding little amp.

Roland Cube gets my vote - after meeting Koogs and kbaim in Cali we played through two micro cubes - I bought one on my return to the UK because they had tone for days - you will not be dissapointed.

YOU were the one that made them sound good....LOL

Mobay45, those were the amps we were using when we stayed at the same hotel and were in the room playing. That was the night you, your wife, kbaim, DaveB and me went to dinner at the fabulous Moonstone. So, you have first hand knowledge of the sound of those little amps. Great sound for little $$$.

All the above mentioned amps are great choices. I would also very seriously consider the Vox AD15VT or the Vox AD30VT amps. They go for around $180 and $ 250 I think. The 30 watter comes with a built in attenuator that allows you to adjust the output wattage from 1 - 30 W. Some serious tones in those! Just my $0.02

PS: The Line 6 Spider II would be my second choice just for that "Insane" channel :D

I use a Line 6 Spider II 15 for practicing at home. The "Insane" channel coupled with my Petrucci sounds amazing for such a small amp. If he's jamming with people, I would suggest the Spider II 30, although it's possible he could get by with the 15, it's pretty loud for it's size. Either way, the Spider II amps are incredible bang for the buck amps.

I'd also vote for the Vox ADVT30 or Roland Cube 30 - plenty of power for what he'll need, good sounds, built in effects, good overall value and under the budget.

+1, i have a Vox ADVT 30 and it's great. I have even took it out to play in place of my Boogie a few times just too see how it would do, and it performed Awsome, these are some great little amps with a whole lot of bang for under a $250.00 budget.

Winnar is you!!! My brother and I checked the 30 out this weekend, and he really dug it. Its got some great built in effects and that built in attenuator will be a godsend for your manager.

The Vox Valvetronix series is a great value for the money, and delivers a pretty versatile array of tones. My vote goes to Vox!

Thanks for the input guys. It looks like the Line 6, Roland and Vox are the amps of choice around here. I'll try to steer them in that direction.

Hey Koogs! Did I ever thank you for dinner? ;) That was a great time, wasn't it.

Roland Cube - Definately. The 30 Watt 10" speaker version is about $225. I just bought the 60 watt 12" speaker version for $345 a few months ago and I don't even use my Mesa Boogie any more - the cube is more versitile.
