"Feel cheap"? Never heard that one before. Perhaps if you compare it to a 12.000 dollar Alembic with fancy wood work....

But, no, I cant agree with that statement at all. Great feel, great personallity and if you ask me I´d sayt that Musicman basses are among the most reliable and trustworthy work horses on the planet. Love them to death.

I just suggest you go play one . There are so many personal preferences when
choosing a bass .

You won't find anyone in this forum that wouldn't recommend an Ernie Ball bass.

Search the forum and you'll find all the answers you need. Good luck and welcome to the forum

Don't hesitate to try the Sterling, it's closer to a jazz, but way better sound.

And the king of it all, the Bongo! It's on my wish list.

You'll probably catch the disease for Music Man after that. :)

I´ve not played many Sterlings nor Bongos to be honest. But Stingray´s has a killer slap sound if that is what you are after but they´ve also been used by bass-players backing up everything from singer-songwriters, jazz to doom-metal and experimental music. Try a 3-band eq Stingray and mess about with the settings. You´ll be able to easily dial in mellow, warm bass sounds with lots of bottom and also crisp, compressed slap sounds. And run the thing through a slightly distorted tube amp and you´ll get a super heavy rock sound. Very versatile if you´d ask me. Definately a bass to try out. Some say that Sterlings are the best ones. Others scream: BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO (Bongo owners tend to repeat this word many, many times in a loud manner everytime they mention it). I personally am a Stingray kind of guy but I don´t really know why. I just like the body shape, the neck, the sound and the whole spirit that comes with them. Musicmans are well worth to check out but if you´ll prefer the Stingray, Sterling or the BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, BONGO, that is all up to you. But I´m quite certain that you´ll get intrigued by them. :)

If you're coming from the Jazz Bass and are comfortable with that neck, and would like to have more tonal capabilites than the classic StingRay offers, then I strongly suggest to check out a Sterling. Best bet would be an HS combination of pickups.

Regarding cheap.... I came back to playing StingRays from basses that cost double or triple times as much, and no MM ever felt cheap to me... they may be light, some are, but not cheap.

As a Stingray player I can confirm what everyone else is saying here -
I am more of a finger player than a slapper, but the 'ray sounds perfectly fine with both styles of playing, its certainly the most versatile bass in that respect that I've got.
I've played funk, classic rock and metal, and been able to get exactly the sound that I was after using my 'ray.

'Cheap' ? - where did you hear that one? - my experience is completely the opposite. The neck is incredibly securely bolted onto the body, I've never had to have the bass set up, and the truss rod wheel is incredibly easy to use to make any minor adjustments you may need to make.

The 3-band eq gives me more control over the sound and tone of the bass than I've had with other instruments that I've played too. A lot of thought and care has gone into the design and manufacture of my bass, and its very obvious that the Stingray is designed and built by musicians for musicians.

I am so impressed by the quality of the MM gear that I've used that I am currently looking to add a Bongo to my collection of basses.

Go ahead and play one - see what YOU think !

ALL EBMM equipment is built to last and you will find this instantly when you pick one up and play, throw it at the wall, dredge it through the ocean floor set it on fire* and check your tuning..... yep! still in tune!

* Mammoth does not condone the deliberate abuse of EBMM bass equipment, save that for the F*nder

Welcome to the Addiction!

OK...let me put it this way....you go from a Fender Mexican Jazz to a Stingray.

That is like going from a Ford Pinto to a Lamborghini! Trust me on that.

Those who say they feel "cheap", well, look at the history of music and past/present players and see where the Stingray sits. It is a great white shark in a pool of minnows.

Go try one. While you are at it...try a bongo. Then a Sterling. Then, you will bang your head trying to decide which one you want....you will be amazed and converted to our family.

I can only reiterate what others have said:

  1. cheap? huh?
  2. if you're coming from a Jazz bass, you might prefer the Sterling's neck over a Stingray's
  3. w.r.t #1 AND #2, just go try them!!!

cheap?? ill tell ya about cheap! my 2000 usa jazz feels cheap compared to the mighty bongo! and to put those mexican junk dogs next to it would be a crime to wood!!

i love the satin finish on the neck.. no more stuck thumb in the midst of a session!
i love the versatility.. just a twist on any of the knobs and you got a different sound coming from it.. p-bass growl and highend crispy zing.. no problem.. jaco sound.. no problem either
then combine all the settings and you can do almost anything
i love the neck pocket stability and fit.. the fender has a small gap, the bongo doesnt and the 5 neck screws make it stable as h***.. no more moving the neck in the pocket!
24 bands... for funk id manage with 21, but its always nice to reach all the way ;)
the looks! it is a bold statement! whilst the dang fender even cant be put in a guitar stand without causing trouble

i can go on and on.. :)

one last thing too: sterling ball and his company conduct themselves in a matter you wont find anywhere else.. keywords: a grand weekend for forum members, a guitar autographed by all attendees at the weekend shipped to a guitarplayer whos son is in the hospital fighting for his life, the customerservice, letting us talk directly to the ceo of a big company not to mention dragging in some other ceo's to talk to from time to time as well

i can go on and on about this too! ;)

try them all, hopefully you will enjoy them so much you will buy em all too ;)
