Geez, is Morse really as short as Joe? :p

(I've met Satch several times, and have always been stunned at how diminutive the guy is...then again, many musicians and actors we think of as giants aren't!)

Elfin magic, perhaps? ;)

Was he wearng the gloves when he shook your hand? He used to do that.

Really? I met him once at a CD signing and he didn't wear gloves when I shook his hand. I realized later though that you shouldn't shake a guitarist's hand when he has a show that night -the line up was about 3-400 people so his hand would have been pretty sore at the end of all that.

Plus think about 300 or 400 hands - who knows where they have been.

I don't think Steve is that short, he may have been crouching down - he looks a little taller than Ian Gillan and Roger Glover so unless they are on the short side too, I think Steve is about average height.

I'll let you know in August -I am going to do my best to get Steve and Satch to sign CDs at the Purple/Satch/Lizzy concert in Toronto.

Joe wasn't pulling any double-Michael Jackson routines whenever I saw him either. That said, I usually met him right before or after shows, so it wasn't like he was in a pre-concert daily protective mode.

He was always a very kind, soft spoken, knowledgeable and very human guy; I can see why he was regarded as such a good teacher by his students. And I think it's great that he has the rapport he does with fans to this day, sore hands be damned.

Speaking of (small-ish) hands, I believe I saw Morse mention in an interview on his website or somewhere else that contrary to his fanbase's thinking, his hands are often dwarfed when players ask to compare at clinics. He claims that since this is the case, anyone can do what he does (yeah, riiiiiiiight)! ;)

I read that too.

you have to love the way Steve encourages other players, like they could be as good as he is - a man with very little ego for sure , maybe when you are as good as he is you have nothing to prove so no insecurities about how good you are. Not only will I never be that good, I don't think there are a lot of guitar heroes that good.

I found Joe to be very humble too and pretty generous with his fans as well. Unfortunately I read on Steve's site that a Joe/Steve jam on the Purple tour may not happen because of the time constraints and logistics -i.e getting every band to cut short so the guitar players can jam.

Steve is my hero and the reason I started playing music man guitars. (Steve should get the commission on all the music man guitars I own) Once I got past being intimated (By going to a clinic and a SMB show) I bought a Steve Mores Tab book and stuck with it. Sure, every song is a technical challenge. But as you are learning it you realize just what beautiful music it is. Truly a guitar player’s guitar player. Now my sets are littered with Steve Morse songs. The response I get from other musicians when I play Morse songs is usually, “Ah…….wow” (speechlessness) After learning Steve Morse songs learning other music is easy. I showed another guitar player excerpts form Tumeni Notes once. His response was “That’s to much work”. Try some alternate sweep picking and string jumping exercises. It will really clean up a lot of your other playing.

Yo Orange!
Where were the Satch Morse pictures you displayed from? (What city?)

No, just me.

That way the only one that improves is me, and I can horde my new knowledge over all of you like a mean guy who hoards things.

Or, I GUESS, Norm could share them with everyone.

Except Warg Master, because he used the dreaded frowny face icon.

Ok Warg Master as well. But that is it!

:)

(Psst.. Norm, send me the REAL excercises and post some fake ones up here... Hey wait a minute! I guess trying to whisper through parentheses is a little foolish on the forums...)

OK let’s try this. Here is the first part of the main riff for Steve Morse’s “Tumeni Notes”. Get the metronome out and start slow. Try just the first 12 notes over and over. The most important thing to remember is that this piece is alternate picking, not sweep picking. Up down up down up down. When Steve plays this the low E string is fretted with the thumb. It is possible to do it traditionally. If you can palm mute this then you are on the right track. Again, Alternate picking!!!!
