Chuck why dont you remember your best birthday? Why dont you make your 50th your best? I know this sounds funny but the world is consumed with this youth stuff and you and I are about as young as they come. We just cant play a young guy on tv.

If a gun was put to my head I wouldnt really want to go back...sure I could have paid a little more attention to certain people and places.....but its done and now I get to look forward to watching my kids develop and grandkids and figuring out how to pay uncle sam when I die.

How much would you pay to have your perspective today at 27? I can't see, hear, or run as fast but I think Im a little deeper and that is my comensating saving grace.

Here is a challenge for your 50th. Make a difference in one kids life through music and your knowledge........maybe two...mentor someone that has similar talent and dreams that you had........If you take me up on that let me know how good that feels.

Great advise BP. I'm proud to know that I'll be owning a great bass made by some one like you.

Yes I am Sir!

But you are only a couple of years ahead of me, how did you accumulate so much wisdom, and I'm just a wiseass?

I’m going to take you up on the challenge and give my best shot. After taking all last year off from gigging I’m out of the loop, but I’m trying to get a gig again. I can’t believe how many bands advertising for musicians have an age limit posted. I am a far better musician now than I was within their age requirements. But I will find a gig, I always have.

As for mentoring, I’ve heard a couple of bands recently that I could coach and I think I could really help them. They are just kids but they have the spark, I really would like to give them some advice, simple stuff really, stuff they haven’t figured it out yet. I could save them a lot of time and maybe improve the act. I’m going looking for them tonight by God!

Chuck, awesome bass. Being a fellow lefty I had my eye on that bass as well. If it would have lasted two more weeks I would have picked it up.

Happy Birthday, Chuck!!

Approaching 50 scared the bejesus out of me. Next month I'll be 52. So far, so good.

Here's what I learned:
A: Don't sweat the small stuff. We've been around long enough to let that stuff roll off our shoulders.
B: Take control of the things you can control. Everything else goes in (A).
C: Enjoy every minute.

Music keeps us young. Telling my High School aged daughter about a new band she hasn't heard of re-enforces that feeling. No "Old Fogey" guilt here!

And, with what (could be considered) an unhealthy obsession with EBMM basses is (in reality) quite healthy. Look at the forumites that sent you good wishes! Something to be said about community, indeed!

I've outlived my parents, grandparents, Aunts and Uncles...even some cousins.

...I don't think that would be possible without being aware of, and involved with, music.
But, you already knew that...

Enough.
Time to go back to 'Lurk Mode'.

First , Happy Birthday Chuck! Up until last June I too was feeling old myself. I put an ad up at the local music store for a bass job. Two weeks later I got a call from a group in their 30s to play rock. I was scared I couldn't keep up with these young men. I'm still with them after almost a year and it couldn't be better. By the way I celebrated my 53rd birthday Friday. You'll be fine Chuck.
