The existing pickup should be ok.

If you can't find an original and don't want to use the existing one then a Carey Nordstrand would be the go. It has alnico magnets (like Music Man) and is based on a 1978 Pre-EB pickup. I bought one as a spare. I tried it with my 1989 Bass and it was fine.

I'm going to try the basslines first, I will finally get a chance to wire it monday

as I just got the wiring diagram from MM so I can get it wired right anyway.
