Fretless is DEFINITELY not my thing, and yes, I have tried more than once to keep a fretless around Camp Bovine.

It was just sad for everyone, so I give up. It is official.

That's a nice bass, but he paid too much for it.

You've probably tried a lined fretless, haven't you? I used to own unlined fretless basses for a few months, then sell 'em because I sounded like crap. Then I got my lined SR5 Fretless and that made all the difference. Still requires more woodshedding and attention than a fretted, but they really make the drippy slow stuff even drippier.:D

First I had this one:

Now why did I think an UNLINED FIVE STRING would be a good first fretless? Because I was DRUNK or something, I guess. I attached myself to that bass for the better part of a year, but still sucked.

Then I sold it. I bought a LINED FIVER, and now I can't find a photo of that one, but it was a vintage sunburst SR5. I still sucked.

Then I got this one:

I was marginally better with the 4 string, but marginally better than completely sucking is still, well, sucking.

The white one made me believe that if I had time, which I don't, I could probably get up to speed on fretless...but I could be kidding myself.

I agree - I've just never had an interest in playing fretless. I've always wanted an Upright Bass - but no fretless. I had one once and sold it.
