What overdrive/distortion pedals do y'all use with the fabulous Luke axe? Over the years of owning a few Luke's Ive found certain pedals dont gel with the EMG's, wheras the AL will love them. I have heaps of pedals, but a few really stand out with the Luke, mostly overdrives for me-

Fuchs Plush Cream
Ulbrick 12 Axe
Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive
Xotic BB preamp
HBE Powerscreamer
MJM Blues Devil

What do you guys find works well for you and your Luke?

I could never get my Luke to sound good with pedals or my amp :( Which is why I swapped out the pickups.

I sort of wish I'd left it as it was because the EMGs sounded out of this world with my POD and POD pro.

Horses for courses- If I had a big budget I would get a couple of Lukes- but thats not going to happen :p

The BB preamp with my Mesa Roadster sound a bit harsh, but this can be good in some situations and with more vintage type of amps.

The thing is the EMG's are a bit compressed so you dont want a OD to be the same. OCD and BB work well for me

Hey Rob,

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

I know exactly what you mean.
My old silo special really LOVED a good boost. Could get pretty much anything working with it.

I'd love to be able to chime in with something...but you have honestly tried more pedal combinations than me

I only have 2 channel amps so I pretty much just run a super clean and lead channel. I just back the volume off on the guitar if i need to bluesy up or mellow to a rythm sound, but when i need to solo my sound is pretty much there.

I run an EQ in my effects loop which I can use to boost the volume or shape the tone a bit more if required... If i'm really really struggling haha I will occasionally use the trusty old Boss DS1 for a fraction more kick... It tends to over compress my old Luke 1s but isn't too bad with my BFR Luke.

My favorite pedal to use with my Luke is from Boss, and is called "Fender '65 Deluxe-Reverb Amp".
It has treble and bass tone controls which help fine-tune the desired tone. It has more of a low- to-midrangey fat overdrive tone than my other overdrive pedals.
It also has both a volume and an overdrive control.
Aaaand, It has reverb and tremolo. The tremolo is okay, the reverb can sound pretty weird if it's cranked up very high.
I like using small amps, like my new 5 watt Gretsch 5222 Electromatic, but most of these little amps don't have any reverb. The pedal's reverb is bearable at low settings.
It's on sale at MF I think.

Hey Rob,

if you can get your hands on them in Oz, give T-REX pedals a try.
Luke endorses them nowadays and they are just great.

If you can, give the "Spin Doctor" a go as well as the "Møller".
The Spin Doctor is a 4-channel OD preamp, but also can be used as a 4-channel stomp in front of amps (damn good, but also damn expensive this one).
The Møller is an overdrive pedal (mix option for just blending a little OD to the clean signal for more kick) and a clean boost for up to +20db on the signal.

T-Rex engineering - empowering your music

Cheers

Axel

Hey Rob

HNY!

I use Keeley modded Tubescreamer.

Also looking at a new pedal made in Bolton UK by Rothwell Audio products. It's currently being used by Gary Moore so can't be bad.

Hi Rob,

I use the Boss DS-1 with the Robert Keeley Ultra Mod.
I also had the Tonebone Plexitube, which is a great pedal in itself but it did not go together too well with my Pod X3 Live, so I sold it.

Happy new year!

I normally just turn the preamp all the way up on my TSL which sounds really fab but anyone tried a classic or trimode from tonebone???

good thread rob,

previously I favoured the TS-9 then lum got me a pignose detonator, which I use for everything now -it only has 2 knobs but it has an excellent voice.

Or when I'm feeling simple - just plug it straight into a 100w marshall head.... distortion everywhere, you don't need to know about boosts!
