I was wondering if you found that I picked up a Bongo while you were away. Here's the thread:Bongo thread

Just wanted to let you know since you were quite persuasive and the Bongo is a great addition to my little collection.

Oh hey! I did miss that. I knew Funky C was selling one but never heard what happened to it - and now I know.

Good that it stayed in the family.

I really like that color. Congrats! You likey?

Oh yes... I like it a whole lot. At first I was like this has TOO much power...what am I going to do with it? I had to get used to rolling off the knobs b/c I like to keep my amp set a certain way. Anyway once I got used to all the knobs and so forth it proved to be an awesome bass. I really didn't think I would use the neck pickup except every now and then but I find that both pickups serve up the best tone.

Thanks for the info on these. Especially since there wasn't one music store in the area that would order one... so I took your (and many others) good words on this bass and decided it was time to have one.

Hah! I thought the same thing when I got my first one - "Whoa, how the hell do you CONTROL this thing?"

Once you get that preamp figured out, though, man, it's like the X-15 of the bass world, ain't it? It's just such a rocketship.

I put TI Powerbass on one Bongo and had to take them off. I swear, it was like putting a jet engine on a skateboard or something. Wild, out of control....I couldn't play slow blues or ballads, it just wanted to slap people and make them cry.

Nice to hear you got it working for you!

I don't know what kinda strings Funky put on here but they're pretty powerful too!

I wonder what kind of magnets they're using on these pickups b/c they just smoke! I was under the impression that they didn't use Alnico magnets for the Bongo. Whatever they used... they still got all the power of a Stingray and then some. Could be that preamp too though.

I believe they're using neodymium magnets for the Bongo p/u's , and yes, that pre-amp kicks the snot out of my Avalon and it's got alot of headroom at the input stage :D

yeah... I expected Mass St. Music to get one in. When they didn't and I got anxious, I just took the EB reputation and the excellent reviews and picked it up blind.

I bought my first two Stingrays there brand new in 1996. At the time, they were the only EB MM dealers around here and I lived in Lawrence then anyway. They used to have a great staff. I haven't bought anything locally in a while so I haven't dealt with them lately.

Maybe you can take the bongo in there some time let the girl play it. I bet they would order 2 of them. I can't think of her name right now but she is one awesome bassist.

They would order it if I wanted to buy it. They wouldn't order one for stock. Big difference. I just wanted to play one before I made up my mind.

No way am I upset with Mass Street music. They are good folks and if I presented that in a manner other than that I am sorry.

I think her name is Anne and she used to own a Sabre. She was the one who gave me info when I was curious about the SUB's when they came out. I would think that Ernie Ball would have had the rep out to visit the store and let Anne play a Bongo already but I could be wrong. I'm still curious why the stores are shying away from ordering 1 or 2 for stock.

I'm going to start calling you Dargin the Enforcer. Which sounds like a character from a Conan movie, but you know, if the Bongo fits.

I guess a Bongo does kinda look like a battle ax.....

Haha.

We did visit Mass Street music on the Scion tour this summer, and had the chance to show off the Bongo. I don't belive that Anne works there anymore. The people at Mass Street Music are very nice, and they are great Music Man dealers.

It just seemed odd to me that they wouldn't special order a specific instrument because they didn't like the shape. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

They let me set there and play the SR 5 for two hours before I walked out the door with it. Maybe they were afraid to hear me do a Bongo.
